Random BP question

Hi all (please be kind I’m still pretty new to all of this). I have struggled awfully with high BP that my cardio and I have worked to get down bc that’s when I get the most symptoms. I have a bicuspid valve with AVR set for Monday. He has me on edarbyclor. And I was taking metropolol but yesterday my BP was low in the 90’s and I felt awful all day like I couldn’t function and was going to pass out so he told me to stop that for now. My BP is still kinda low. This morning was 106/73. Is that normal? I haven’t taken any meds.

Your BP probably will normalize after the AVR. Before that, I'd keep it low to ease the heart. 106/73 is not unbearably low, its just you are used to hypertension IMO. And good luck to you on your surgery.

That is within the normal range for blood pressure. My wife's normal blood pressure is about 95/60 to 100/70.

Blood pressure is generally not considered low unless below 90/60. See link below.

My bp usually hovers around 105/70. I have had it 90/60 area on occasion. I feel more at ease when it is on the low side .

Thank you! I think I was like what?!? Bc I haven’t taken meds and it’s staying low and that’s never happened. Thanks for the responses. My cardio thinks I won’t even need meds after that it’s all been from this. It just seemed so odd to go from 160s and higher with meds to normal without taking any. but I guess I should be thankful!

It is due to the fact, when normal, your body reacts differently after you have had high BP for time. This will happen till you have the normal BP for some time for the body to adjust. And you are taking BP lowering drugs that makes a difference. Just be patient and the adjustment will take4 over.

People say that the BP normalises, and I hadn't AVR myself. I know for sure from my athletic experience that the heart is very adaptive.

I took my blood pressure daily for the first few months after AVR surgery. And weekly after that.

My BP was normal 8 weeks out from my surgery.

A little more detail. It was normal from the start, but the normal range right after surgery was achieved using a beta-blocker. I tapered off of the beta-blocker and by 8 weeks I was totally off of it. So, when I say it was normal after 8 week, I mean that it was in the normal range without any medication.

However, although it was well within the normal range at 8 weeks, it was slightly higher than it was prior to surgery. Before surgery my average was 115/80. 8 weeks out from surgery, without any meds, it averaged 125/77. It gradually lowered from that level, over the next 12 months, down to an average of 117/77, where it has remained, right about where it was prior to surgery.

Thanks for the reply . Post AVR I am on 1.25 mg beta blocker and 2.25 ramipril for bp. Before my first surgery my Bp was 120/ 65. After my the first surgery it was 105/ 58 , due to a regurgitation I was advised to be on meds.Post Second surgery I am still on meds and sit at 122/80 top end of normality
I am wondering why my diastolic jumped so much post AVR ? I know AVR has influence on this , however would I see this start to fall ?

Thanks for the reply . Post AVR I am on 1.25 mg beta blocker and 2.25 ramipril for bp. Before my first surgery my Bp was 120/ 65. After my the first surgery it was 105/ 58 , due to a regurgitation I was advised to be on meds.Post Second surgery I am still on meds and sit at 122/80 top end of normality
I am wondering why my diastolic jumped so much post AVR ? I know AVR has influence on this , however would I see this start to fall ?

It is interesting how the guidelines have changed for high blood pressure. I can remember having a blood pressure of 127/80 mmHg at the doctor’s office a several years ago and being told I was doing great and that I’m good as long as I’m under 140. However, the guidelines were updated a few years ago, reflecting new data and 127/80 would now be considered elevated.

From Harvard Health:

“A new definition of high blood pressure (hypertension)

(Please note that all numbers refer to mm Hg, or, millimeters of mercury.) The guidelines, in a nutshell, state that normal blood pressure is under 120/80, whereas up until Monday, normal was under 140/90.

Now, elevated blood pressure (without a diagnosis of hypertension) is systolic blood pressure (the top number) between 120 and 129. That used to be a vague category called "prehypertension."

Stage 1 high blood pressure (a diagnosis of hypertension) is now between 130 and 139 systolic or between 80 and 89 diastolic (the bottom number).

Stage 2 high blood pressure is now over 140 systolic or 90 diastolic.”

I’ve been having fluctuating high blood since my surgery.Im on 25 mg of metropopol and 100 mg felecinide once daily. My body been from 177/87 down to 137/82 . It seem to be dropping a little each week, the last 6 years before surgery I was between 130/65 to 135/ 70. I have kept pretty good track of my bp when I started medication for a fib 6 years ago. My cardio says it should fall back to pre surgery levels by 6 month 2 1/2 m9nths to go.

Way back some 35 years ago or so, my cardiologist had me on beta blockers. They did the reverse for me of what they were intended to do, and actually raise my blood pressure. The reason was that I didn't agree with beta blockers and they seem to promote an agitated state in me and hence higher blood pressure. He took me off them right away and put me on Lisinopril which seem to agree with my system better. I'm only taking 5 mg of Lisinopril and my blood pressure is very good.
