What questions should our daughter ask the anesthesiologist
when she meets with him/her the day prior to surgery?

The most important question would be to ask for his 'M & M' numbers (that's for Morbidity and Mortality).

She may also want to inquire about possible allergic reactions and how he monitors the patient during surgery.

Every anesthesiologist that Joe has ever had a meeting with has been an expert in heart surgery. They were detail oriented, very thorough and asked a lot of questions. They also had an excellent working relationship with the surgeon, since they work together as a team. So, I would say, if you have confidence in your surgeon, you should have confidence in the anesthesiologist.

Post-surgery, I noticed the lingering effects of the anesthesia were very strong. If I had to do it over again, I would have requested that the anesthesiologist go on the light side - I am not very heavy and it felt like I had enough junk in me to keep a 350 lb man asleep for a week!

Also your daughter should tell the anaesthetist if she has any allergies or has ever had a reaction to anaesthetic in the past. I'm specifically thinking of nausea or vomiting - they can give her an injection beforehand to counteract this if she is likely to react to the anaesthetic.

You know....I never ask anything...Derek has been through it so often (10 surgeries) that its like a walk in the park (well anything that doesnt have to do with the heart anyways)

If I had to do it over, I would ask how the pain is going to be managed before the breathing tube comes out. I tried to tell him that I really didn't want to be awake then, but they don't like that because they want to be sure you can breathe on your own before they remove the tube. He may not be responsible for this part of it, but may also know what they do. As the person who will see your daughter first, You should ask her how she's feeling, and have her blink or write answers. I only talked to my guy the on the phone the night before surgery. I really didn't have any questions for him, I assumed my surgeon would only work with people he trusted.

I met my anethesiologist just before I was wheeled into surgery at about 7pm. He was very good looking, and I just didn't seem to have any questions for him!! He was friendly and confident and talked to me as we went into surgery. I hadn't been given any drugs yet, and was amazed at how that room looks, not like I had expected at all. It was big and long tables held lots of instruments. Then I was on the table and he gave me the cocktail, and I was out so fast.
I awoke and it was over.
I think you must trust the surgeon you have chosen to pick the guy he likes and trusts.
It has worked for me twice , now.

I wish I could remember the operating room, my last memory is being wheeled down the hall. It feels like I missed something.

I met the Anet. right before surgery. All I remember is being wheeled into the operating room and looking around a little bit then I was out. Woke up in ICU off the vent and all the tubes gone except what was under the covers. My Sis keeps telling met that she couldn't believe how good I looked after surgery. I was awake after surgery but they gave me something so I would not remember. Wonderful stuff. I am sure you could ask for this when you talk to the Aneth. I don't have the name but it is the same thing that they gave me when I had the TEE. All I remember was having my throat sprayed and then nothing after that.

The throat spray before your TEE was most likely something to suppress the 'gag reflex'.

VERSED is used for 'conscious sedation' and does produce a short term 'amnesia'. The level of sedation can be adjusted by varying the dose to produce anything from 'aware but doesn't care' to 'totally out of it and doesn't remember a thing'.

Compaired to the good old days this is little concern to me. I have been opened up so many times!! But to help you out a bit with your question, understand they do not put you any further under then they absolutely have too. Just enough to get the job done. And the "truck" we keep talking about is related to these drugs. In the old days the truck was a semi (full mind you). Today it is a mini bus.

For the most part your conversation is him asking you many questions. Not you because there is little need. But be sure he ask you about allergies!!! ANY allergies you may have he needs to know. Also remember no food!!

You might also make sure he talks about her teeth.
The problem is when a person is semi-concious they tend to bite hard on any foreign object in their mouth, like the breathing tube.
If she has any caps, crowns, etc. the anesthesiologist should be made aawre of it.

12 years ago I had a TEE before my Balloon. They gave me something that made me not care and loose tongued. When I saw the doctor heading for me with that large object they were going to put down my throat, I made a rather rude comment that made the docter and both nurses stop their tracks and blush. Still makes me blush when I think about it. I wonder if I was awake enough to talk before the TEE at surgery? Hope not.
