M&M

Hi, I was wondering - if anyone had 'cold' hands and 'cold' feet when they were in the 'waiting' phase of surgery for mitral valve. I've looked at the various 'sites' and I don't see where anyone has posted anything regarding this. But my BP has gone UP from what its normally running.. I've been exercising 'more' so my BP would normally run lower. Instead its gone UP.. Last night I was freezing cold - I took my BP and it was 165/100 - which is not where it usually is. I wonder if there's a correlation between the two. I must be NUTS - this is probably just 'stress'.. Or maybe excitement as I've decided to do the Disney Marathon in January. Maybe I'm tooo excited.. :)

Hi Runner

Hi Runner

Hi There Runner

I too have cold feet and generally feel cold and I too have Mitral Valve Trouble plus I have cardiomyopathy. I was told that because of the valve and the cardiomyopathy, that my heart does not relax after a beat and therefore blood may not be getting to all areas I.E. poor foot and leg circulation. I don't know if this is the case for you, but I thought that I would share with you what my docs have told me in hopes that it might give you some insight..Take Care Harrybaby666:D :D :D :D

Oh Thank You Harry - I'm sorry to hear that you have it to - but thank god I'm not going NUTS and its not all in my HEAD.... I've had it the past several months - hopeful it would disappear - not highly likely at this point. Its aggrevating. The rest of me is warm - just my hands and feet are cold.. Not all the time - but at least part of every day. Of course it goes away when I get my 'hot' flashes - which is quite often. My body is driving me NUTS..

I don't like seeing my BP go up like that. That's not normal at all - I wonder if there's a correlation between the two. I could e-mail my EP doc and ask. But I'm afraid he'll have a 'remedy' that I might not want to hear.

Thanks for responding Harry.

Best Wishes

High BP

High BP

My blood pressure was 195/135 when I went to MD and congestive heart failure due to mitral valve stuff was diagnosed. I am quite sure that mitral valve failure leads to high blood pressure. And your poor heart is trying its hardest, so the least important parts of your bod lose circulation first. Therefore - I'd sure notify my doc of the cold hands/feet and spiking BP.

Good luck.

cold hands and feet

cold hands and feet

After reading your post, I too had cold hands and feet most of the time. I would go to bed and my feet would be ice cold along with my hands. I also had a toe that would be kinda blue at times. This is all gone since I had the surgery. You are not going nuts, I felt the same way prior to surgery. It seems that I was more aware of what was going on with my body. I think with Mitral valve disease, you tend to adapt your lifestyle to keep up with is going on. I can't tell you how much better I feel now. Energy level is great but I need to get back to excercising more. Hope this helps,

Thank You Marcia and Georgia - I said the heck with it and I just e-mailed my cardiologist. I don't care - if I sound crazy - its there and its driving me NUTS.. So, I'll wait for a response from him. I told him I'd like a simple remedy.. :) I like 'simple' remedies. I feel great other than that. I ran 5 miles on the treadmill this morning. :)

I really can't thank you for responding - I was going NUTS and more than that I've been drivng my husband NUTS - everyone at work has been feeling my 'hands'... One day in the office it was 80 degrees and my hands were 'freezing.. I kid you not.. They won't let me near the thermostat in the office. They think I'm NUTS.. I can't wait for WINTER to see how cold they get then. I think I'll wear mittens at my desk. Yesterday was 'awful' - it was there all afternoon and part of the night. I get those 'tingling' feelings tooo. You know like if your hands were frozen and then they thaw out.. IT tingles.. Anyways, I finally got a hot flash and the 'cold' feeling went away before bedtime. I hate menopause - I don't know about you other ladies - but I've been in menopause for 12 years and I don't think its ever going to go away. There are days I would just love to shoot myself and put me out misery. I'm sure my hubby feels the same way - the thermostat temperature in the house goes UP and then DOWN and then UP and then DOWN.. He doesn't know what to think !!! Well, actually he does but he just kind of smiles - he knows its been rough on me.. I've been 'nice' through it all - just frustrated with my body..

Oh well, thanks for letting me 'vent'.. I told my PCP a couple weeks ago - heck this heart disease ain't nothing compared to menopause.. I HATE IT..

Thanks for listening..

The big"M"

The big"M"

I am with you on the menopause. Since the surgery, I am hot all the time not cold like I used to be. I tried going off the estrogen patches but it was worse than ever so I went back on them. My husband is turning up the heat and I am putting it down. I sometimes wish that men could have a baby and both of the big"m's" then could see what it is like. After the angiogram, my Cardiologist thought the holidays were making me so tired even when my husband told him that I was tired all of the time. He thought I was deconditioned according to his report on the angiogram and wanted me to wait another 6 mos to do the surgery but I knew that it was time. He actually admitted that he was wrong and I was right. The mitral valve was the problem.
Hope you get all under control,

My husband alwasy said: he wears the pants in the family - I just tell him what color..

deconditioned

I have been married to the same guy for 38 years and he is lucky to have me. He admits to that. haha. I just walked my break at work but had to stop in the antique shop just to see what they have. I really don't what I am looking for. It is 70 degrees in Illinois today but going to drop down in 30's tonight so I thought I'd better take advantage of it. Going to start back at the gym regularly soon. I am between a rock and a hard place, I need the excercise for my heart but then my leg with the "blockage" really acts up. Can't win for losing. These 50s are so much fun. Hope 2004 is better for us than this year.

What is the lastest news on when you think you will have surgery? I thought I read one of your posts that said in Jan. Are you on meds for high b/p?..When was your last heart cath.? My hubby (of 38 years) had one done a few weeks ago. No clogged arteries..but heart not pumping hard enough. He is now on b/p meds...Your high blood pressure is way off normal..and I don't think stress has much to do with it? My hubby is the most laid back person in the world.:D :D But his was sky high too when he went to the doctor. Heart trying to work too hard.:( :( Now, his b/p is normal..:D Take care..Bonnie

HI Runner,
Are you taking any Beta Blockers? Sometimes those meds will make you have cold hands and feet. I'd keep an eye on the BP though, if it stays that high, I would call the DR.
Running at Disney? Now that is a happy thought! Good for you.

I had cold hand and feet before my surgery. Always wore socks to bed. My blood pressure was always in the Normal range though -120/80 ish.

Post surgery, the cold hands and feet are gone. Sometimes I even stick my feet out from under the covers at night because they are hot. That NEVER happened before the surgery.

Last time I checked my BP was 117/70.

Hi Mara, thanks for your message. It helps to know I'm not imagining it.

I did get a message back from my EP doc - he doesn't know what it is - but this is a 'common complaint' although it could be my thyroid - I might want to have that checked with my PCP.

I've had that checked hundreds of times in the past and its always been fine. No I think this is my heart causing this. As for my higher BP well he tells me that it tends to rise as people get older !!! How nice !!!

SO, that's about the best advice I got from my cardiologist.. Isn't that nice.. Makes my day. You know I don't complain unless its really bad and I just don't like his answer.

I don't think he realizes how aggrevating it is and frustrating it is.. I may stop taking my baby aspirin and see if it gets better. In other words - I'll try to 'fix it' myself. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was my valve. I don't want to fix that - just for cold feet and hands - but I may be able to temporarily remedy the situation until such time as surgery if I stop the aspirin.

Thanks for your message and your understanding.

Sincerely,
Runner
