Is anyone here on SSD? I have a friend who is on it (not for heart reasons) for the first time this year and he wants to know about taxes. Do they tax the money they send to you? I would assume not, but we want to make sure. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

If this person is married and makes x amount of dollars in the year, part of the SSD payments may be taxable. If this person is not married and had no other income, no it isn't taxable. You may want to look at the IRS site for the dollar figures and how to figure the amounts if you think the marriage rule thing applies.

A worksheet comes in the mail that you can fill out to determine if any of your income is taxable. They don't tax your SSD but like Ross said other forms of income need to be figured into the worksheet to determine whether or not taxes are owed. I have found the whole process to be user friendly and not complicated at all. Check out the web site Ross posted, it should help.

Thanks, Ross and Lori. Currently he's trying to get a divorce, so by the time tax time rolls around he SHOULD be single (but will the couple of months he was married and on SSD factor into anything?). I know he's been doing odd jobs for his dad, but I am not sure if he's being paid or not, and I doubt it would be enough to bother taxing. I'll pass the information along to him, along with the web site. I appreciate your help! I knew when he started talking about it that I could get the answer from someone here! ;)

It's best to read the tax rules. It's going to depend on how they file their income tax returns at the end of the year. It's most likely nothing to even think about, but without knowing all the amounts and circumstances, only the rules will tell him what he wants to know.
