My husband is 13 weeks postop MR and AR valve replacement. He is doing cardiac rehab and the discussion was about persons with pacemakers cannot have MRI's. Now we wonder if this is true of tissue or even mechanical valve replacement patients.

Anyone know of any information on this?

I have tissue mitral valve and was told MRI is safe for me.
By all means, your DH needs to check with his doctors about his particular valve.

My mitral valve card said it was safe for an MRI. I have a St Jude's mechanical. I just also have a pacemaker so am not eligible for that test. But the mech valve is no problem.

After my replacement, my family practice doctor said there was a period of time that would have to elapse before they could run an MRI. I don't remember why, I have a bovine valve, but it was something to do with the amount of time needed to heal. No problem now though.

Joan, when your husband's valve is registered you will receive a card that describes the valve and provides information concerning scanning. Sometimes the surgeon's office registers the valve but you can do it yourself with the documents you should have received at discharge. If in the discharge papers, you don't have the basic information about your husband's valve (Brand, Model, Serial No, Date Implanted, Name of Surgeon, Hospital) you need to contact his surgeon's office and ask them for it. Do this now before the paper trail goes cold. As I said, however, you probably have all the information you need in the discharge documents. With that information you can call the manufacture and most will register the valve over the phone. They will then send you an identification card which should answer questions such as the one you asked about MRI. This will also get your husband listed in their database so that if any significant information arises in the future they can send that to him.

My own surgeon's office failed to do this but it was a simple matter to do it myself with my valve's manufacturer (Edwards). My card arrived several days later. There is also a telephone number on the card a hospital can call for additional information.
