Hello Everyone,

Im happy to report i have been feeling AWESOME, its almost 1 year and im doing everything i have always done before my surgery and actually more!

My question is about a Anti-Oxident called Pycnogenol. This is extremely good for you and I have taken it for years. After my surgery i stopped taking it. It seems to do your body lots of good.

My concern is maybe it will do to much good and make the Coumadin not work as good.

I take 10mg of Coumadin a day and my INR is at about 3.5 all the time. I have a Aortic Valve.

I also am going to start taking CoQ10 every day, i used to take that as well and felt great.

I guess my question is will a good AntiOxidant and CoQ10 hurt me in any way or effect my Coumadin/INR?

Thanks,

Tommy

There have been reports that coenzyme Q10 may decrease the effectiveness of blood-thinning medications such as warfarin. Therefore, you should not use CoQ10 supplements if you are currently taking warfarin without discussing this with your healthcare provider.

I was on Coumadin for a year, and when I asked the doctor at the anticoagulation clinic whether I could go back to taking CoQ10, he said yes, but just be consistent about taking it (that way they can find the right dose of Coumadin). I don't know anything about the other antioxidant.

Hey Tommy =- good to see you and know how well you are doing.

Just in case you haven't heard, VR is having a reunion in Orlando, Feb 20 -
24th in Orlando at the Holiday In Main Gate East, Kissimmee - 5711 Orlo Bronson Mem Hwy. Would love to see you there?

I took CoQ10 (100mg daily) for a period of several months in 2006 upon the suggestion of a Physician Assistant. My INR moved to the hi side, 4+. I talked with my PCP and discontinued CoQ10 in early 2007. My INR went down to +/- 3.5.

Antioxidants slow blood clotting, so by definition they will interact with your anticoagulation drug.

Albert took CoQ10 several years back and his INR increased and was unsteady. His cardiologist took him off of the drug.

Hey Al, great to see you posting again!! Have you been busy with retirement or teaching the coumadin seminars??? I learned alot from the one i attended and we all do appreciate your expertise!! Thinking of you,

Thanks Pam.

I had a lot of e-mails from people requesting that I come back - at least every now and then.

I have been retired for two months as of today. I am doing three seminars every other week. I'm going to Southern California, Las Vegas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan in the next two months.

There is also a requirement that every hospital must have a plan to reduce the harm done by mismanaged anticoagulation in operation by the end of this year. So I am writing a book for training hospital personnel now.

Thanks everyone for the good info.
I also asked my cardiologist today if should stay away from it and he said he has had patients on it for years and years and no problems.
Either way i will montior my levels pretty closely over the next month and report back any unusual changes.
Thanks again and I will try to make the reunion if i can escape from my job that is,

I would recommend that you start them ONE at a time for a few weeks so that if you see a change or problem, you know which one is the culprit.

thanks Al. I had the same question. Lipitor is making me feel very achy.
Lipitor can cause pain and muscle cramps. Since you are experiencing this, you should ask your doctor to try another cholesterol drug. Just make sure you check out the interaction with Coumadin and keep an eye on your INR when you start it.
