I'm SO frustrated with my ProTime. As I've stated before, it no longer holds a charge, and I frequently get error messages when I feel I've done nothing wrong. Today I went to check my INR and everything SEEMED to be going along hunky-dory. Until it came time to give me my test results... And it read "Error- Control malfunction" or something to that effect. What the heck?! So now I have to wait ANOTHER 30 minutes to try again because I only took one test strip out of the fridge. And I'm down to my last two (one now, because I have to try again). I am REALLY thinking I want to get an INRatio. So who do I call to get that done?

Thanks for letting me vent.

Sorry you are having so many problems. Home testing should be easy not this tough.

I would start with QAS. Most of the time they manage to come through especially when it comes to getting the monitor approved. I have only had issues with getting test strips approved and even that has been resolved now. They are very fast with getting supplies out which is important and have always had the items I need in stock.

You're giving me flashbacks Niki!!!! How old it your machine? Are you making any moves towards getting a new one or having yours refurbished.? I think it costs around $375 to get it refurbished and they send you one to use while they have yours. But it would be nice if you could get a new INRatio or XS.

My ProTime is only 4 years old. Well, a little more than that, but I wouldn't think that would be long enough to cause this many problems. And shelling out over $300 to fix this thing does not sound appealing at all. Not when I've heard all the good things about the INRatio (which I keep wanting to type "INRation" for some reason...). I have not yet started trying to find out about getting it. I may try calling in the next few days if I have time (HA! What's that?!). I might try calling my insurance company first to see if they'll approve it. I'm on a different insurance than I was 4 years ago, so maybe I'll have better luck with them (bought the ProTime myself, if I recall).

Thanks, geebee for the advice. At least now I know who to call! I wasn't even aware that QAS did them.

I was told that the ProTime should be refurbished every 3 years. And that was about the time that mine really started getting outrageous.

All you need for QAS to get the ball rolling is an Rx from your doctor for home testing and they start the process. Go for it!

That's rediculous! I'm sure insurance isn't going to pay for refurbishing it every three years. It sounds easier to just get a new one. I hope the INRatio has a better long-term prognosis than that! I understand it giving out over time, but three years?! For a machine you are going to be using for the rest of your life, that sure is short!

Thanks. I'm going to try calling my insurance company, then my doctor and QAS. I doubt I'll be able to get it before heading out to the Mayo (less than two weeks), but I can at least get the ball rolling.

Hi Niki

First let me say I'm not at all surprised that you're fed up with the Protime......I guess we've had our protime about as long as you've had yours.....mine is already in the garbage!!!! so you can tell how much I loved that one!

With all the problems that we have had over the years with QAS regarding billing, processing claims, answering phones, etc., I have to tell you that you don't have a very big choice in who to use....it's QAS or Tapestry medical in California---at least that is for the Coaguchek and probably for the INRatio, too.

This time when we got the INRatio, we went through QAS again because they're willing to do all the paper work....a VERY big plus. They're still not wonderful with answering phones, but at least they now call back within two days or so most of the time. We used them for the third time and I have to say I guess we're coming to an understanding. I do think customer relations is something Lance and crew should work on, but it has improved. I can tell you, though, they send their bills out very promptly!!!....even when the insurance hasn't even paid for the machines/supplies yet. We got a bill for our INRatio yesterday and when I called on it was told to disregard it because they hadn't gotten a check from our primary, no less secondary, yet.

Soooo, if you're willing to deal with that, then go with QAS. If not, then go with Tapestry.

I can tell you, though, you will LOVE LOVE LOVE the INRatio (I want to type ration, too) it's easy, thinks for itself, does it's own controls, all you have to do is put in the code, and uses less blood....MUCH LESS than the Protime or the Coaguchek. We did order the electric adapter/charger because I don't trust batteries, so it is worth it.

Good luck with your decision.

Evelyn

Niki,

Of course it is up to you but I would not call the insurance company myself. QAS knows the right things to say, the right codes, etc. I would just get your doctor to fill out the form (QAS can send you one) and then QAS will do all the work.

Good luck.

After a long, long time dealing with labs I am going to Home Testing. My doc. prescribed it 2/9/07 and FedEX will deliver it 3/l/07. It is an INRatio and I am getting it thru Raytel Cardiac Services. They have been very helpful and the only qlitch was the initial claim approval request was filed with the wrong Anthem. Raytel tells me that the machine is provided free of charge as long as Raytel serivces my INR. My cost is to be +/- $32/month. My medicare provider, Anthem Advantage (Medicare)will pay any and all balance. They have approved "in home testing" for 6 months, then reevaluate. If I am comfortable with it I will file for a benefit extension. Hopefull, all will go as it has been explaine to me.

Dick,

You are going to love home testing. I am fairly new to it considering how long I have been on coumadin (started home testing about 2 years ago) and it is actually fun for me. Now I can save my arm veins for important things if needed (hopefully not).

Enjoy your new toy.;) :D

I've already talked to my card about getting a prescription. I should be able to pick it up on Monday when I pick up all of the records they want me to take with me to the Mayo. I'll try calling QAS (or, it sounds like Raytel might be a better option?) before the end of the week, if I can just find a spare minute somewhere in the day! It's near impossible these days...

Thanks all for your support and help!

When I got my new INRatio I contacted Raytel because I had been getting my PT cuvettes from them. With Raytel it is a management system they offer. They don't sell you the machine, you purchase their "warfarin management services". You have to test once a week, on the same day, you have to phone them your results and they phone your doctor's office. They may even do the dosing for you, I'm not sure. From what I hear, if you don't call when you're supposed to, they call you and want to know what's up.

For some people this may be fine or even preferred and it's still much better than having to go to a lab. But I do my own dosing, I test twice a month now and not always on the same day. Part of the beauty for me is I test and don't have to call anyone with the #. I call my cardio if I have a problem I can't manage on my own. That has been twice in 4 years. I like to feel I'm in control. With Raytel's service - I would feel like they were in control.

Refurbished Protime.

Refurbished Protime.

Nikki,

I also have a older model Protime and it also didn't hold a charge anymore. For some reason I didn't get any error messages. I sent it in to be refurbished by ITC through QAS. They sent me a loaner for the time being and after what seemed like a long time they sent it back and my Protime works like a charm again. The battery is fully charged. I paid QAS $350.00. I bought mine in 2001 and this is the 2nd time I've had it refurbished.
Since my insurance (PacifiCare) won't pay for anything, I have to pay out of pocket for a new machine. I thought $350.00 is better than having to pay for a brand new one. What are they up to now, $2500.00?

You're right. I don't want to deal with that either. I prefer being the one in control and don't like the thought of someone looking over my shoulder or telling me what to do. I guess I'll be calling QAS (didn't have time today... We'll see if tomorrow fares better).

If insurance won't pay, I may have to go this route. We're trying to save for a house right now, and the $2-3K would sure take a chunk out of it. But if I can get insurance to pay, I'd MUCH rather try out the INRatio. I'm hearing nothing but great things about it, and I'm rather fed up with the ProTime at the moment.

Thanks everyone!

hey Niki, here's my two cents worth.. I had the protime when i first started on coumadin (within 6 mnths) but I could never use it correctly.. so I stopped, now I have the INRatio and love it.. had it for couple years now.. while i'm not thrilled with QAS's billing.. they've always come thru for me with emergency supplies etc..

I guess i'm lucky.. I had a durable medical benefit on both insurances, so both times they covered my unit and supplies.. whether it be an HMO or a EPO as it is now..

good luck

Okay, so I managed to get in a call to QAS today and have downloaded all the forms that need to be submitted. I've also sent an inquiry in to Raytel to see if it's possible to get the machine without the monitoring service. I'd really rather not be forced into someone else's schedule. I don't test every week because I'm stable (for the most part) and I prefer making my own adjustments. But if I can get the machine for less, I'm all for it.

Thanks everyone. You've assured me that I'm making the right choice in looking at the INRatio. :D

Niki:

Just curious: What is your insurance carrier? You teach in the Garland schools, I believe. Dunno if school districts have different insurance carriers, or if they all use the same one through Teacher Retirement System. John's in the TRS, but has insurance through the state of Texas.

Sorry it took a bit to respond. I went out of town for the weekend (visiting my mom and sister).

My district has HealthSmart as their provider list, through HAS. At least, I think that's how it works... Every district I've been in has had different insurance and none of them used the state one. Districts have also been known to change carriers altogether while I've been there. You almost have no idea from year to year who you'll get!
