I thought that I would provide a bit of encouragement to those of you about to go into surgery or just recently out of it.
I had my aortic valve replaced on March 29, and have now been golfing for at least a week. Last week - I not only completed 18 holes, but carried my bag over the winding hills of my beautiful golf club here in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
This was at least 4-6 weeks sooner than the times that I was given orginally before I went into surgery.
I must admit that I was swinging quite cautiously - and in fact, the results were even better than now when I have become more free in swinging those sticks.
I shot a 40 for the front nine - but that ballooned to a 47 on the back after I started to revert back to my natural swing. I have been out about 3-4 times now and carrying my bag actually feels good.
There was initally some soreness my sternum area - but nothing that seemed anything more than normal healing. After reading some of the other posts - I did take some Vioxx my GP had given me, and that pretty well eliminated even the modicum of soreness.
Just for the record - I am 57 years old, in reasonable shape - I work out a couple of times a week at a local health club now and have been spinning (stationary bikes) since the end of April about a month after the surgery.
My Coumadin level has been bumping around a bit from 2.5 to 4.2, but has been relatively stable around 3.0 for the last week.
I can occasionally hear my Medtronics mechanical valve - but have now gotten quite used to it and even find it rather reassuring.
Golf is totally addictive, and I just thought that knowing that it is possible to get back on the course sooner rather than later would be reassuring to many of you.
Having something to strive for and look forward to makes the healing process healing process go so much more bearable. Now - the major remaining hazard seems to be the weather.
