I thought that I would provide a bit of encouragement to those of you about to go into surgery or just recently out of it.

I had my aortic valve replaced on March 29, and have now been golfing for at least a week. Last week - I not only completed 18 holes, but carried my bag over the winding hills of my beautiful golf club here in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This was at least 4-6 weeks sooner than the times that I was given orginally before I went into surgery.

I must admit that I was swinging quite cautiously - and in fact, the results were even better than now when I have become more free in swinging those sticks.

I shot a 40 for the front nine - but that ballooned to a 47 on the back after I started to revert back to my natural swing. I have been out about 3-4 times now and carrying my bag actually feels good.

There was initally some soreness my sternum area - but nothing that seemed anything more than normal healing. After reading some of the other posts - I did take some Vioxx my GP had given me, and that pretty well eliminated even the modicum of soreness.

Just for the record - I am 57 years old, in reasonable shape - I work out a couple of times a week at a local health club now and have been spinning (stationary bikes) since the end of April about a month after the surgery.

My Coumadin level has been bumping around a bit from 2.5 to 4.2, but has been relatively stable around 3.0 for the last week.

I can occasionally hear my Medtronics mechanical valve - but have now gotten quite used to it and even find it rather reassuring.

Golf is totally addictive, and I just thought that knowing that it is possible to get back on the course sooner rather than later would be reassuring to many of you.

Having something to strive for and look forward to makes the healing process healing process go so much more bearable. Now - the major remaining hazard seems to be the weather.

Hey Harvey,

Way to go !! ...from one golf freak to another!! When I had my bypass I was so anxious to start golfing again. Seems I did it slower than you ...going out with a seven iron and adding a club each time out.

Remember to take it easy...no use rushing and compromising all that surgery...slow and easy does it. Its a long summer partner...enjoy!

By the way, I love the Martime golf...wife and I have done it three times now...Cape Breton my favorite..followed by PEI..and mainland NS follows.

Get well and come west to Niagara golf!!

Congratulations Harvey!

Congratulations Harvey!

hey Harvey ...well done Lad ...I'm married to a the Local Golf Champion here and gave birth to another golf fanatic ..so I understand the pull chasing a ball over hills and putting it into a wee hole can have ....why on earth you have to do it eighteen times in all types of weather is quite beyond me to explain though.
Good for you ...getting back to normal is great ...and every hurdle overcome is a one up to you !
If you ever fancy a game in the Home of Golf ...let me know ...

Hi Harvey

Wow..You are our Spring Poster Boy for recovery.:) :) BUT, being the Mother-Hen that I am..take it easy..Walking is great..but carrying a heavy golf bag:eek:   No shoulder pain?Speaking of hazards..watch out for those stray golf balls. Wouldn't want you to get hit in the head..Last Friday night at my grandson's little league game, I had 2 stray balls to almost hit me..from another field. Those little kids are tough.:p :p :p Again, take it easy..Bonnie

"I ballooned to a 47". How golf scores are relative! I would have said, "I deflated to a 47!" :D I'm only six weeks post-op and haven't golfed yet. I'm more worried about that 2 1/2 foot divot I would take than the swing.:D Think I'd tear that sternum wide open again. Congrats on a great recovery.

Hey Harvey, it is Great to hear how well you are doing. Monday will be 5 weeks since my aortic root replacement and aortic valve replacement. I start rehab on Wed. I hope I am able to swing my clubs in the near future. Take care of yourself. Dave

I knew there had to be a lot of other fellow golf enthusiasts, and I am just tickled by all the responses. I guess I also should come clean - and provide some more of the details.

I actually followed a similar course to Jackc - I started out with just pitching and putting (my wedge and a putter) for a couple of rounds before I dared to try a fuller swing. What I also discovered was that I did become a little sore in the chest - I am pretty sure that it was the ligaments described elsewhere on this site as osteochondritis (spelling?).

My GP had given me some Vioxx as an arthritic pain reliever that would have minimal interaction with the Coumadin - and that worked like a charm.. I suggest that some of you may find that particularly useful because both Aspirin and Ibuprofin do not fit well with Coumadin.

I would like to thank all of you for your great encouragement.

Jackc - there are now some newer courses and our selection is now better than ever. I belong to the Ashburn Golf Club - and we have two beautiful courses right in Halifax. If you come out again - maybe we can get out for a round. I appreciate the offer of a round in Ontario - and may take you up on that some day. My son works in Ottawa - and I do get up to see him occasionally (he is a golfer too - and like all the younger generation today - hits the ball out of my sight range.

Scottie - I don't know when I may get back to Scotland. I did play St. Andrews about 30 years ago - back when a round of golf and rental clubs cost me about 10 quid. However, the same goes for you - you should definitely make the pilgimage to "New Scotland" and see what your emigres have done in the New World.

Maybe we need to start a Clicking Valvers Golf Society?

Hi Again Folks

Hi Again Folks

Bonnie..anytime your son in law is heading our way let us know ...poor man ....how could anyone keep a golf nut away from a golf course ....I love the peace it gives me :)

Harvey ! ..£10 ...emmm...what century was that LOL....it must have been a wee while ago ...my hubby laughed when I told him ....he said £10 would hardly buy you a couple of pints in the club house nowadays ....but if you're ever heading our way let us know ...

JackC...what a man of good taste you must be ...we live two villages up from Dornoch ....there are two golf courses there now ...and it is a lovely course ...Hubby has played it many times ...hilly though ...we live on the 12th tee of our Links course and as it is a James Braid (Sp?) course it is very well respected in the world of golf ..or so I'm told ...in fact my son is now working on the course. Anytime you're dropping in by let me know :)

Hi Harvey -

Glad to hear you're doing well in beautiful Nova Scotia...keep it up! I've had the pleasure to visit your beautiful part of the world and am hoping to return some day.

About 6 years ago, just a few months before being stricken w/ endocarditis (& start of my valve problems), I bicycled the fabulous Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island. Best doggone bike trip I ever took! I'm not sure I could make it up those spectacular hills today...but give me some more recovery time...I'll be back!

Bill,
One of the top ten golf courses in the world (according to Golf Digest and others) is Highland Links right in the middle of that beautiful trail that you cycled.

If you haven't played it yet, you better come back - and it is a terrific bargain as well (I hear the the cost has now increased to about $70 Canadian).
