Hi All

I've just seen a new headline on the Sydney news here in Australia, about a possible new drug for ant-coag. Apparently the drug would eliminate the need for coag monitoring as it would be suitable for people of various sizes etc. The drug is undergoing trials and it is hoped that if all goes well it would be vailable before the end of the decade. It was also said that the new drug could replace drugs such as wafarin and be most useful for people with heart rhythm problems and also those more prone top strokes. The news organisation is SKY News Australia.

Regards Butterfly.

Is this drug being researched for valvers, in addition to folks with Afib? I read the news article but it didn't mention those with mechanical valves.
Just curious. Thanks.

From my understanding NO. Don't go placing bets on a replacement for Coumadin and valves. It's not going to happen any time soon.

I had a medical researcher/doctor/client tell me about this new upcoming drug a few months back. He knows I'm a valver, and he thought it would eventually be used for us, too. I'll admit I'm wary of any changes, and will let someone else play guinea pig.

I think I'll let someone else be the guinea pig, too.

I'll stick with warfarin, in spite of any drawbacks. After all, warfarin has been on the market for 45+ years. Its early use was marred by inability to determine the level of anticoagulation and dosage changes needed. We have more reliable ways of doing that now.

I'm sure we will see replacements for warfarin. But those of us with mechanical valves are at greatest risk for clots, and we'll have to wait a long time to be approved for any replacement drug.

Add me to the no thanks list also. If I found coumadin to be a problem, maybe I would be more willing to take a chance but I am fine with the status quo.

Not me either

Not me either

I like my coumadin, I just got my hometester and look forward to putting holes in finger rather than being stuck with the needle. Let someone else try the new drug, I am still amazed with my hometester.
