I was wondering if anyone else has ever dealt with a GI bleed. I think I have a possible slow bleed, and have had for a few months. Just a quick background: I have a St Judes mechanical valve in the mitral position. I recieved a Bjork Shiley mitral valve 32 years ago, and had it replaced with an adult sized St Judes valve 21 years ago. So I have been on Coumadin for 32 years. I was 2 years old when I started on it, so I don't notice any side effects, because I don't remember life any other way. that being said, I don't worry about Coumadin much. Most of the things I've read on here, I've never been told and never thought twice about. For instance, I eat brocolli and salads, and I shave with a non electric razor, and so forth, and I've been pregnant four times, miscarried twice, and carried two to term. I know it's not the way most on Coumadin do things, but it's how I've always done things. My doctor isn't worried about me.
Anyways, I get a certain pain in my neck/shoulder when I am bleeding internally. (only happened after delivering both of my babies) I have had it a few times in the last year or so. Yesterday I had the pain again, so I started looking up internal bleeding symptoms online. One of the things mentioned was black, tarry stools. I have had them often in the last year or so, but not in the last few weeks. I didn't know why they were like that, and never researched it. It wasn't that big of a deal to me at the time. Online, my symptoms also pointed in a GI bleed. Since my stools don't look like that now, I'm not going to go to the doctor for a scan. If they start looking like that again, I think I will go in. I got my INR drawn today, and am still waiting on the phone call for results. Basically, I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with a GI bleed and what they did for it.
I bled internally after both of my C-Sections, and had to be transfused. My last C-Section was 17 months ago, and I think this may still be related to that. I was left with my incision open and had to have my husband pack it with sterile gauze twice a day. I had two hematomas that I had to let my body reabsord, but the bruising from them was still there a year later. It is still slightly discolored, but they say sometimes when you have that much bleeding, the skin stays discolored, so I don't know. Wow, that was long! haha

Just got my results. 3.4, perfect. I'm not so worried now. If my stools change again or I get more symptoms, then I will see the Dr. Thanks

That is great news! FWIW...my father had an internal GI bleed (from cancer) and one of his symptoms was shortness of breath that was attributed to him being severely anemic. He did receive blood transfusions that helped tremendously.

Thank you for sharing your story. Wow...you have been through alot over the years. Wishing you all the best...

mom2angel,
Thank you for sharing.
It is good to hear that your INR is in range.Hope everything stays great for you!

Glad to read your INR is in range, have you thought about home testing? Home testing will give you that peace of mind. Don't worry about what you eat, as a good forum member used to say, dose your diet. Don't always believe what you find on the internet, sometimes that stuff will scare the begeeses out of you, trust your doctor to give you the facts.

Always listen to your instincts. Tarry stools are not a good sign but not to panic, call your doctor and get checked to be sure all is ok. Sometimes the food we eat makes it different colors. Worst case is they would have to do a colonoscopy to check for internal bleeding. My GI doc insists on stopping Coumadin and bridging when it's time for the lovely over 50 test. It's almost time for my next one, oh joy.

I am happy to read that you have two beautiful children, a blessing for you.

Thanks for the responses. Good to hear. I actually started home testing in July 2012. But this week, I couldn't get a big enough drop of blood. I tried four times this week, and just decided to go to the lab since I was worried. This is my 1st time going to the hospital lab since receiving my meter. I explained that I couldn't get enough blood, and they understood. After reading some posts on here, I think my hand was probably too cold. It's January in Nebraska, and I keep my house pretty cool. I read some good tips on here, like soaking your hand in a glass of very warm water for 30 seconds beforehand. I will try that next month.
I take 14mg daily, and it works for me. For many years, I took around 7 1/2 mgs daily. My dose has changed after every pregnancy. Personally, I think my body has built up a little tolerance to it after 32 years, even though doctors will say that's not possible. There's just really not a lot of people out there that have been on it over 30 years, so not a lot of research available. LucyLou, good luck at your next yearly appointment ;) and thanks for the kind words. They put my mind at ease. :)
