I was startled awake around 3:00 AM (yes AM) Thursday morning with the EMS folks in the next county being paged out and told to go to to town of Lumpkin, Georgia (about 9 miles from here) 10-18 (REAL FAST), that an officer was down (just like on TV). As it turned out (during listening to the two way radio that morning and based on TV reports this night, some NUT got mad at his brother and they had a fight. His brother went to the Sheriff's Office to complain. The NUT followed him there and took a shot at him with a 9MM pistol. He then headed for the Courthouse across the street. Both a Deputy and the Chief of Police heard the shots and came running. He shot both of them (one on the side of the face, another across the nose). One of the EMTs heard the shots and also came running. The NUT then shot him too.
I think 4 or 5 surrounding counties were responding by this time. He fired a few more shots (not hitting anyone else, thank God) and took off. All the EMS folks that responded had to wait until the area was secure before they could provide aid. The Chief and the Deputy are listed in satisfactory condition but the EMT took a round in the leg that severed a vein. People in the know said he just about died right there from loss of blood but they were able to fill him full of fluids and bring him back. He is listed in unsat condition. They say he may loose his leg because of the wound but would probably survive.
Around 5:00 AM the NUT then took several women hostage and was surrounded again. He suddenly started shooting again (hitting the Chief of Police from a surrounding town in the shoulder--not life threatening). When he stepped away from the women his fire was returned, hitting him at least 5 times in the chest. At least someone had been to marksmanship training!!!!!
Several of the "talking heads" on TV said he committed "suicide by police". At least now we won't have to worry about a trial. Sorry, that may sound cold but those were my friends in harms way. I didn't respond (what would I do, spray water at him) but could not get back to sleep listening to the traffic. Needless to say my butt was dragging Thursday. WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING UP AT THIS HOUR???????
Please say a prayer for all those involved in this mess and a special prayer for the three in the hospital. This world is getting more dangerous every day.
The town this happened in has a population of around 1100. Seems it doesn't matter where you live.
May God Bless,
Danny
