is depression postoperatively not as prevalent as in the past? a friend's husband had a replacement 10 years ago and she noticed a brief personality change from always nice to a little bit crabby. Any comments?

Can't speak of "today" since my last surgery was 12 years ago but I certainly had personality changes. Most obvious - I was (and still am) less patient with people. I think it is due to not wanting to miss anything so I don't like things taking up more time than is absolutely necessary (unless the "things" are precious moments).;) :D ;)

I find that I'm more tolerant and patient. I tend to shrug off little annoyances since I feel that none of them matter in the greater scheme of things.
I think it's normal after surgery to be preoccupied, and that might have been the cause of your friend's husband's personality change.

*scratches head*

Ya know ... I go both ways.

At times, I'm more patient and more happy ... because I realize that people need people ... and I love meeting new people/making new friends and visiting old friends and family.

Yet, at the same time, I'm more impatient and less understanding ... like when people believe companies like Chevrolet and the Tribune Co. Best not get me started ;).

Ssssooo....I think if anything changed in me personality wise, it changed in terms of degrees ... in other words, my emotions/personality are more amplified than previously.....

*shrugs*

Or not ;).

depression can be, and often is, a side effect of heart issues. Any cardio will tell you to be on the alert for depression. After heart surgery, we have had quite a few who became depressed, some having to go on towards treatment with a psychiatrist. It's a common part of it all.

The 'pumphead' syndrom may be also considered.

Then there's just our plain old personality.
