The Sunday before my pacemaker replacement surgery, I took my '87 MC LS to get washed and then drove it out to the heated garage where the older 4 MCs are stored to leave it since I wouldn't be able to drive for a week. During the drive between the car wash and the garage, a song came on the air that seems to "pop up" just when I need it. For whatever reason, whenever I hear the entire song on the radio, I get the "it's going to be all OK" feeling.

The song?
"Drift Away" ... and it doesn't matter if it is Dobie Gray's original version or Uncle Cracker with Dobie Gray. It is one song that tells me everything is going to be fine. Most times, I'm hearing it during a road trip ... and it settles me down quite a bit. Not even sure why, perhaps it is the "confused and wasting time" feeling that turns into relaxation and comfort feelings from the music....

At any rate, this made me think of other "Perfect Timing" songs for me ... such as Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats". Again, not sure why, but I tend to hear this one when I'm needing to vent/let off steam. Perhaps it is the blending of baseball and cars in the line, "I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights", that makes me smile and relax a bit ... I don't know.

So ... what songs are "Perfect Timing" songs for you?

"I think I finally know just what it means" ... Mac Davis ... 'Texas In My Rearview Mirror'

Beach Boys - "God Only Knows" or "Wouldn't It Be Nice".

Louis Armstrong - "What A Wonderful World".

Neil Diamond - "Sweet Caroline".

Queen - "We Are The Champions".

And oh so many others.

Three that I can think of off the top of my head:

1. Kanye West's "Family Business" -- I listened to this song almost constantly for about a month during a rough time in my life. Whenever I hear it now I remember to endure and that I can overcome most anything.

2. Counting Crows' "Long December" -- Just always makes me feel happy to be alive and helps me put things in perspective (especially after my second OHS which happened to be in December). I wanted this song to be played at my funeral (is that morbid that I was picking out songs for my funeral before my 2nd OHS?).

3. Fastball's "Out of my Head" -- I always loved the first line of this song: "sometimes I feel like I am drunk behind the wheel, the wheel of possibility, however it may role." Reminds me of the mystery that surrounds life and makes it all that more enjoyable to be a part of it.

Nice thread Cort,
Brad

Generally I only listen to contemporary Christian music and it seems that certain songs do pop up on playlists just as they are needed.
They include:
I Can Only Imagine----Mercy Me
Better Way----Downhere
More----Matthew West
Grace Like Rain----Todd Agnew

As far as secular music there is one song that seems to always come along and just makes me feel good----
Walking on Sunshine----Katrina and the Waves or anybody else!

Peace of Christ,
Don

Mine are usually from the 70's.
"Drift Away" has always been a favorite of mine as well.

Some others are (odd group, I know) "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, "Sister Golden Hair" by America, "My Love" by McCartney, "You're So Vain" by Carly Simon, "Rock On" by David Essex, "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by BTO. Could list more, but that'll be it for now.

Fun thread!

Don - we share some of the same songs.

Being a contemporary music director and worship leader I hear so very many songs that seem to come - just at the right time.

I Can Only Imagine - MercyMe is a definite. Reminds me of what awaits me and because it's so great, I have nothing to fear.

Our God Reigns - Delirious? (the question mark is part of the name) - I listen to this song when it feels like the world is going to Haedes in a handbasket.

If I Stand - Rich Mullins - This was the song that got me interested in Christian music so many years ago and why I now have the career I do. I heard this song when I was at my sickest and it gave me such hope - "If I stand let me stand on the promise that You will pull me through. And if I can't let me fall on the Grace that first brought me to You."

Stuck in a Momement - U2 GREAT song! Look up the lyrics!

Beautiful Day - U2 I think of this song when I wake up on a beautiful morning

I could go on and on, but I won't. Music is big in my life - always has been.

Love the topic Cort - I'm really looking forward to reading more.

Oops - almost forgot - The Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want - perfect song!!!

Maybe my favorite christian song is "Breathe" by Michael W. Smith....just feels like being enveloped in God to me. Of course, "I Can Only Imagine" is one of those songs as well. Also like Chris Tomlin.

Different songs at different times...

Different songs at different times...

I believe that God can use certain songs at just the right time to send us the message we need to hear. We usually only listen to contemporary Christian music too...but used to listen to a lot of country.

Somewhere during that transition period, we had the clock radio tuned to a country station, mostly because we couldn't get the Christian one to come in.

This was almost 4 years ago, I got the dreaded phone call in the middle of the night that my dear sister had passed away from breast cancer. After a few hours of crying and praying, I finally fell back to sleep. It was a Sunday morning and when the radio came on to wake us for church. I could not believe the song that was playing. It was "Wish You Were Here" by Mark Wills.

The chorus to the song goes like this:

Wish you were here, wish you could see this place
Wish you were near, I wish I could touch your face
The weather's nice, it's paradise
It's summertime all year and there's some folks we know
They say, "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here"

If we had been able to get our favorite Christian station tuned in, I'm pretty sure that "I Can Only Imagine" would have been playing, that song came out just before my sister died. I still can't hear that song without imaginging Patty "dancing for Jesus".

I have had many instances like this, but this is the one that stands out the most.

The doctors told me that the reason I had NO problems with my lungs whatsoever post surgery was because I sing so much! In the car.....in the shower.....at home, alone..... music is my tonic of choice --better than any drug or liquor -- sometimes better than other humans! :)

Fun thread, Cort!

These are some of mine:

Enigma - Return to Innocence (imminently calming)

JJ Cale - Magnolia (sweet and longing)

U2 - All I Want is You (great to sing with)

Paul McCartney - Maybe I'm Amazed (perfect love song)

Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone (great reminder that there is intelligent, poetic life, somewhere)

:) Marguerite

I also love "I Can Only Imagine"--it gives me peace to think of what is to come, and how much I can look forward to that time. Although I'm not quite ready to go there!

A sad/happy story about that song.....A couple of years ago we had a man on our unit with melanoma, with lots of metastatic disease. He had been struggling to breathe alot of the day, and did not want to go on the vent. His family and friends all came to see him, and gathered in the room, playing music. It had been pretty emotional for us to go through that decision process with his wife....but when that song began playing in his room (he was right across from the nurse's station) it got us all crying.

Other favorites...."I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor (go ahead and laugh LOL), "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor, "Tapestry" by Carole King, . For some reason my mind is kind of blank, I know there's more but the titles don't come immediately to mind.

Great thread, Cort!

Funny Henslyee would mention "Don't worry - be happy".

Was driving down the highway yesteryday so much on my mind, plate, etc. That song came on the radio quickly removed my "worries" turned up the volume....had a big old smile on my face:) It was almost like a hint from above...telling me not to worry and be happy! :)

Holy cow ... I was hoping this would be a fun thread, but had NO idea how fun it would be. I, too, am looking forward to reading more.

Some of you have mentioned songs that I had forgotten about ... like Mercy Me's ... love that "I Can Only Imagine". Have a few Michael W Smith favorites, too.

I know some of you have noticed, but I tend to put a song quote at the bottom of each of my posts.... If you have noticed ... and have been watching them through the years ... you'll see a wide variety of artists and styles of music.....
