Hello averyone
I'm a new member although I've been reading these forums for some time. I had a mitral valve repair in august. I received a bill for "pathological surgery". I'm not questioning the bill but I wonder whether anyone had a similar case and know if they performed that test during surgery and the reason for it. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks

Get on the phone and ask just what they tested. Even better, request a copy of the pathology report for your own records! I can't speak for all surgeons or hospitals, but some do this routinely while replacing or repairing valves. They may or may not see anything wrong with the tissue, but biopsy it anyhow. Not uncommon, but I'd sure want to know what and why if it were me.

Thank you for the answers. I feel better that the test seems to be routine. I have an appoitment with my oncologist in a couple of weeks and will ask him to find out more but I feel better now that I read your reponses

I had had a ruptured chordae tendinae when they did my OHS. I have a history of bacterial endocarditis, so they removed it and sent it in for a culture. I still haven't been able to grow things, but pathology keeps sending me bills for the cultures anyway. ;)
