Ok, here is a question. I got my handy-dandy mechanical valve (and the coumadin along with it) in August, and since then I haven't had any "green" things. But now that time has past, I'd like to start enjoying those things again. I know that everyone says you can eat as much of that stuff as you want, but to just keep it the same every week. Well, how do I introduce those things into my diet without getting my INR all crazy

Should I start eating a little at a time and gradually get to the amount I want or do I just start eating away? I hope this makes sense to everyone :D

Thanks

You should introduce changes gradually and monitor your INR weekly to identify changes. If you do that, you will find out just what greens affect your INR and the amount. Everyone is a little different.

Have fun and enjoy those greens.

If I were you, I'd reintro myself to the hardcore Vit K things first, like brussel sprouts, brocoli, spinich, etc. That way you can make probably the biggest single adjustment in your dose and perhaps the only adjustment necessary. Foods really do not weigh in very much for INR. You'd have to really really pig on nothing but greens for a bit to cause much of a change.

It is too bad that you got faulty advice about greens. If you had been eating them all along, you would have that all accounted for by now.

Green things have vitamins that your body needs, so no one should go without them. Others have given good advice.

Salads...

Salads...

Nathan was around maybe 2 wks post op (not sure...the dates are starting to mesh together!) and we started incorporating our dinner salads back into our routine. I think his INR had just reached the 2.5 level following surgery, and we wanted to make sure that his salads got figured in to his dosing right away. We have kept up with salad daily since then (about 3 wks) and his INR has been pretty darn stable, sinking only once when he wound up in A fib. The doc told him to have a beer and relax when he got home from the ER that night:) But he refrained....wasn't much in the mood for one. He is on a strong antiarrythmia med, amiodarone. Having a tough time weaning him off of it but hope to soon, and then we expect his numbers to start to move around a bit, but keeping our fingers crossed!
