I was preparing a lovely dish for dinner last night (please check out the Recipes forum for the recipe) and managed to slice the top of my thumb off!! Since we are still in the midst of unpacking, we couldn't find any of our first-aid stuff, so I ended up at the hospital, bloodied rags in tow, hoping they could stop the bleeding before I keeled over!

Anyway, I came home with the thumb looking like something out of a cartoon and had to get my dear beloved to finish dinner (..we managed to find the piece of thumb and nail amongst the onions and left that out of the mix!..). He's been having a great time rubbing in the fact that one of my oft quoted sayings is "you never cut yourself with a sharp knife". Hmmmm - I guess there's a first time for everything

Perhaps an addition to "Handy cleaning tips": chopping of fingers is a great excuse for getting out of the dishes :D :D

Ok, I'll pass on that invitation to dinner thankyouverymuch! =)

I've never cut myself cooking (my dad cringes once in a while when he sees me cutting stuff up and ALWAYS asks to do it for me) but I've sliced myself up a few times working on art stuff.

The latest hack job was a "beautiful" papercut on my right thumb. I was trying to pick out a sheet of tracing paper from a pad of the stuff in one of my art classes when it happened.

Let out an audible expletive in class to which the teacher responded, "Don't take it so seriously, there's no need to swear in class."

I told her I had cut myself and she offered a bandaid.

I took three and wrapped up my finger against her objections.

"You only need one" she said.

"No, I'm taking the extras to apply pressure because I'm on anticoagulants..." always use big words when talking to people who don't have a clue "...and this won't stop bleeding for a few hours."

She gave me a really puzzled look as I went back to work then asked if I needed medical attention.

"Nope, not yet."

I gashed up my thumb once cleaning out a travel coffee mug and I had a blood draw go "bad" on me outside the lab while on the way to my car. Beyond that, nothing.

Family hates that I still use a disposable razor about 80% of the time to shave with even though I have a nice electric.

The disposable is faster and gives me a closer shave. I've NEVER cut myself with it.

I am feelin' your pain. Hope you are doing better and have the bleeding under control. Thankfully you are not taking Coumadin

The one and only time I sliced my finger good.....was just about 9 months pregnant. Home alone and 40 mins from the nearest hospital. Drove myself there...big belly and all. Memories

I just had to go check out your recipe after reading this.........

and nowhere under ingredients do I find "tip of thumb." Hmmm.......... :D

Sorry, couldn't resist. I do hope your thumb mends soon. Take care and steer clear of the cutlery for a while.

More teasing.....

More teasing.....

Interesting way to get additional protein into the mix. :)
Seriously tho, I am glad you came out OK despite missing a part of yourself now. I am sure it will look odd for awhile and it sure must "ouch".
Thanks for the recipe, I am definitely going to try it.
Smiles, :)

Ahhhh, Harpoon, when I was your age I had never cut myself while cooking either (..I've got 2 years on you, so never say never (so I learnt the hard way!)..), although I always seem to burn myself! I did manage to get a pretty decent gash from a glass breaking while I was washing it, and papercuts...!!!! I think they hurt more than losing the tip of my thumb - I kid you not!!

And no..... I don't recommend adding the "secret ingredient" to the mix!! I do sometimes throw in some mushrooms for a little extra protien and I think that's where I should be drawing the line! :D

Cheers all,
Anna : )

me too 3x3

me too 3x3

Watch for the run of threes Anna....
We had 2 trips to the emergency room last week.... Tues my 12 y.o. jumped a fence and landed on the head of a nail. ouch. So much blood.....
Thurs my 9 y.o. was hit in the face with a hockey stick. ouch again. 2 stitches in his chin. Friday I smashed my car (not badly). I wonder why???

Liamity -
Ummmmm...... thanks for the warning (????). Actually, I almost got hit by a bus when I was in Melbourne over the weekend. I didn't look closely enough and thought it was a tram.... dashed across the tram lines then heard the horn blaring as I stared ambling across the road - oops!

I also nearly blew up the microwave last week (...tragic incident with a dim-sim...) and the house still smells of rancid smoke, so hopefully that's my 3 out of the way..... fingers XXXX'd - or at least what's left of them... heh heh heh :D

Is there any data on how much a diet of sliced thumb will effect your INR? :D

Must've been hard to figure out how to bandage.

Lots more protein in thumb-tips than mushrooms, though the 'rooms may provide some minerals. And not nearly the problems associated with beans!

Tsk. You sure are going a long way to get rid of your fingerprints. What have you been up to, woman?

Best wishes,
