I checked the list, and I don't think my pig ever signed up...

I already have a donor card, which I agree is a good thing. Thinking about it, though...although they say that everyone should sign up as a donor, I have to wonder. They won't accept VR blood. I wonder if they'll actually use our organs.

This is a good thing to be aware of, but my hope is that we all get to wear out our organs instead.

Best wishes,

This is a very personal issue for me, so the subject immediately caught my attention.

It's great to sign an organ donor card, but be sure you also talk it over with your families. In some states, just signing the card does not mean that your organs will definately be donated. They still have to get permission from your family. So it's a good idea to talk it over with them so they know your wishes ahead of time.

I dont want to be morbid -- I am facing major surgery, I am young and fit, I will probably survive, but on the off chance something happens I would like to make sure everything is put to good use.

Here is a link to the FAQ on the organdonor.gov site:

Organ Donation > Frequently asked questions

It addresses prior medical conditions in #16 ( I will contact them to ascertain whether I would be a viable organ donor )... if not one can always donate ones whole body for experimental medical science ( #14 ), another interesting statistic is the one pertaining to non-resident alien organ donations ( 2001 334 donated vs 259 received )#15

Buhair,
Your response kind of hit me sideways in the head. I'm not saying that being hit in the head is something that is necessarily bad for me, but it was a jolt. I was thinking of organ donation as a "in the future, years down the road" time frame.
I didn't recognize that you were talking about organ donation in the event you didn't survive surgery. Now that I do, I'll make sure I sign all the necessary paperwork in my presurgery preparations. I've always planned on it anyway and have it listed on my driver's license. I guess I just hadn't considered it with the OHS surgery.
Thanks Buhair for the reality check.

It seems to me you should be able to sign something at the hospital as well, if you wish. Cards are only of value if someone knows you have one. My wife knows my wishes, and feels the same, so I know they'd have gotten whatever they could use.

Mary, I'm surprised you haven't bumped into that dark wall in your mind before this. Maybe it's more of a male thing.

There is a time before surgery when some review their finances, unfinished projects, insurances, and other "arrangements." It's not the most pleasant mudpit of thought before surgery, but some of us spend/spent some short time wallowing there as a matter of somewhat surreal and macabre practicality. As long as you don't stay in it too long, it's probably normal and okay. I held off on some other, more minor health-related things, too - even spring clothes - just because...well, I might not have needed them?

Since surgery, I've had a crown and a bridge completed at the dentist. I'm also going to have my eyes lasiked this year, as I've reached the end of what progressive lenses can correct.

Fortunately, you see, we get to come back home and feel foolish about it all later...

Best wishes,

I've been too irritated that my heart wasn't going to be used for a heart transplant to think about any other organs. I have lived my life thinking someone would get a great heart from me, and then I learned my valve was going to prevent it.
I had forgotten that there are other organs other than the heart that are needed. I'm going to be cremated anyway, so what the heck! Let them use everything they can.

Organ donation

I've often talked to my husband about my wish to donate whatever can be used after I'm gone. I've also told him that if Bruna ever goes before me, I won't hesitate in agreeing that her organs too are made available to another child. I know that's something that no one wants to think about, but unfortunately it can happen to anyone. I've seen and heard of too many people suffering and in many cases dying because they couldn't get a new heart, kidney or whatever. Robert used to say that he didn't want to become a donnor, but has recently chaged his mind. They tried to bring this system with the card here in Brazil, but it didn't last and now what really counts is what the family members say. If the person is married it's the spouse who decides it, and if not then it's the parents ,and so on. Just wanted to share this with you.

This hits close to home now...

This hits close to home now...

I just learned a few days ago that my first cousin, Corrine who is all of 27 years old, needs a lung transplant ASAP. She has severe Pulmonary Hypertension...(it appears to be primary, not secondary, like I had before my mitral valve surgery). She has four young children, and is not expected to live another 5 years without a transplant.

I have thought about signing up to be an organ donor...but have yet to actually do it...I guess I should now. I did think about the chance that I wouldn't make it through my OHS....but I didn't want to face it at that time I guess, so I didn't do anything about it. As Debora said, You just never know....

Jean, your cousin will be in my prayers. And if she would like to know of a good web site for lung transplant support, I can provide you with a link. Just PM me.

I don't know if this still is a catch, but I was told several years ago that if you have Organ Donar on your driver's license that you must specify "skin", that it is not covered under the Organ Donar agreement, for some reason. So I've always written down "skin" on the back of my license. I heard this at the same time hearing about how skin donation is so important to burn victims and that there always seems to be a need for it. Just a little thought.

From what I understand, as long as you let your family know your wishes, you're covered. Some states don't really recognize what's on your license. They only accept what your family says. So unless they know what you want, nothing will happen. Be sure to discuss with your family. It may be a difficult conversation to have (especially with impending surgery), but it's an important one to have.
