I swear things happen here that no one would ever expect. Every bit of this story, strange as it seems is true.
A couple of nights ago, I was walking in the dark towards my shop. I often don't take a light because I know where I am going, and I never tire of looking at the stars. Remember, this is a place where it is 60 miles to the nearest town.
All of a sudden, my attention is drawn to brilliant vertical lights some distance away (I later found out I had seen them from about 20 miles away). These were similar to what you might see at a "grand opening", but several times stronger. So, what else is there to do but jump in the car and go see what is happening? As we are driving down the road, it becomes pretty apparent that the lights are coming from somewhere on the Jemez Pueblo. Now this is extra strange, since the Jemez people aren't even crazy about cameras, let alone lights on steroids.
When we get there, we are happy to find out this is a part of the Pueblo that is normally accessible to non-tribal members. There is very serious technology all over the place. This part of the Pueblo has large red cliffs, rising from the ground and going up approximately 300 feet. And every kind of picture you can imagine is being shown on the cliffs. These pictures are 100’s of feet in dimension, yet extremely clear. Lights are shining on and above the cliffs from hundreds of yards away. I am no expert, but even I can tell there is a very serious laser beam shooting from a platform about 40 feet high, on a horizontal plane into the cliffs.
Now I am wandering around the site trying to take this in. This was no less strange than seeing an elk in New York City-nothing was coming together for me. To top it off, a very polite and well trained individual came over to tell me he is security, and would I mind moving to the other side of the long strand of white lights that surrounded the place. We don’t have “security people” around here.
I can be a little forward when I want to be, and soon found myself talking to the guy in charge. First he wanted to know if I was from the press-that one was easy enough to answer no. Then he wanted to know if I was a blogger. I told him I didn’t have any regular blog. As we talked more, he found out that Barb is a second grade teacher at the local school. He liked that-it turns out that, even though I am stuck with a dial up modem, the school has a T1 line (I think that’s a big deal) which these guys were using. I have no idea how they could use it-the school is about 1 mile away.
One thing he told me was they were amazed and thrilled that no crowds were present. I basically promised not to be the first one to “break any news” of what was going on here. My first question was, “who are you people?’ Remember, this is the land of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and my first thought was this is some kind of bizarre military exercise without nearly enough security.
Well, this was the farthest thing from a military exercise. These guys were from Yahoo. And I don’t think I have ever been in the presence of so many really smart people doing something that-to me-seems so silly. The hardware and software running the laser had been put together on the spot by one of the young “super geniuses’. It was shooting into the cliff because they hadn’t yet received clearance from the aeronautical administration to shoot into the air. If I understand it correctly, the software allows the laser to shoot pictures and messages into space. I thought immediately of an entertainer friend of mine who would think it way cool to have her picture beamed into space on a super-hi-tech laser beam. (Not Karlynn, by the way). The school connection may have paid off-the guy said my picture of her will have high priority on the laser beam. I told her if she gets abducted by space aliens its her own fault.
Here is a link to the first blog to break the story. It will give you more details. I don’t know how he got the information, but once the story was out I felt free to tell you guys about another really strange evening in the Jemez. By the way, I do not in any way endorse or vouch for this blog. I never heard of him before today.
