Our son's best friend is in the last month of his 2nd tour in Iraq. He will be done with active service in August and will enter the inactive reserves for 4 years. This is a young man who's birth country is not the US. He received his citizenship during his first tour in Iraq. We exchange email a lot and IM when we can, and now that his time in the service is coming to an end he is faced with deciding what to do next. He wrote to me twice "I want to do something to make an impact on this world, no matter how small." It brought tears to my eyes. I wrote him back that he's made his impact and it was no small one.
Danny - I'm so glad that you point out the fact that we have an all-volunteer military. I know many young men and women who have volunteered. Unlike prior to the Iraq war, no one can say that they volunteered not knowing what they were facing. They all knew....and they volunteered anyway. I think it speaks a lot of this younger generation.
