Hi all,

I need AVR and am considering the On-X valve. I believe I am also a candidate for a minimally invasive proceedure which will hopefully be done at NYU Medical in NYC. I am scheduled for my first consult with NYU Medical next week.

My question is, has anyone heard if an On-X value can even be inserted via a minimally invasive procedure? I understand that with an On-x valve, "special" stiching is required.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have an On-X and it was done via the minimally invasive technique. However the term minimally invasive isn't as minimal as one might think. A typical AVR with full sternectomy is about an 8 inch incision. Mine was about 5 inches as they don't completely cut the breastbone. You will probably heal a bit faster but your still gonna know you were in surgery :D

Thanks Scott,

At least I know it can be done.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I have an On-X and it was done via the minimally invasive technique at NYU Medical in NYC by Dr. Argeniano. He did a fantastic job.
I’m here now in Bel Air, MD and my new Cardiologist was impressed with how small the incision is……to me it just means the healing time should be faster. Best of luck.

Hopefully my input is not too late.
Need to change my profile.....

Hi there - and welcome to the gang. I am definitely going to explore minimally invasive as an option for me (aka mini sternotomy). I'd liekk to be able to go that route, but I am also considering a Ross - which I'm told is the full thing. So much to learn and decide it's almost becoming a second career. Best of luck to you.
