I met with my surgeon and we have decided on the new On-X valve, which is undergoing trials of lower and non-use of Coumadin. Anyone have one of these put in? Supposedly they're widely used now. :D

Yes we do have a couple people. You must still take Coumadin though, so don't think your getting away without it. Randy has one and I believe Emma's daughter has one.

Yep Ross is right, my daughter Chloe has one. Shes 6 now and got her ON-X when she was just 18 months old. Doing brilliantly on it!! (touch wood as yearly checkup is in 3 weeks! arghh!)

Although the chance of lower INR or alternatives to warfarin/coumadin are there, they are remote and/or way in the future so it may not be the best deciding factor for which valve you use if its that alone thats swung you.

We're very happy with it however.

The website for the makers of ON-X is www.mcritx.com

On-X

On-X

I had an On-X valve replacement on February 17 of this year. I know each person here has a different experience based on a great number of factors. All I can say is that I am very thankful for my new valve and it continues to tick reasuringly. I'm walking and running with no discomfort. It's hard for me to have an opinion about valve performance because I have nothing to compare it with. But so far, I'm a very happy customer.

I am on Coumadin therapy but hope someday I won't have to be. I can't take any credit for making this choice of valve. My situation came about very suddenly so I didn't have time to research all the alternatives. I went into emergency with angina and came out of the hospital a week later with one bypass and a brand new On-X valve. The only smart thing I did was leaving everything up to my surgeon, Dr. Michael Woods at the San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland California. He knows more about my heart than anyone else in the universe, outside of God of course.

My ON-X was installed on 3/8/2006.

I felt/feel the design of the ON-X is very comprehensive. The manufacturer attempted to improve the typical mechanical valve design in several areas. Some of those areas, along with the material itself, have lead to the reduced anticoagulation study now underway. If INR can eventually be lowered - all the better. I am happy with my choice right now.

The choice between mechanical and tissue valve can be difficult for anyone. And the choice of which mechanical or tissue valve to go with can be just as difficult. Between you and I - good choice!!!!!

Best of luck!

Nope, but like you I'm pushing for this one. Clinical outcomes have been excellent across the board.

On-X valve

I too chose the On-X after doing quite a bit of research. My reasons were that maybe sometime I could get off Coumadin, and the fact that the ON-X produces less turbulance in the blood flow. Less turbulance means less chance of blood clots. I don't know if I was the first person that got that valve at St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, but I do know that every nurse in the cardio ward came in to listen to it, and all left the room saying they had never heard such a quite valve.

My surgeon recomended the On-X because of the future possibility of lower or no coumadin dosages. We decided that it sounded like the best choice to us.
