Hi everyone

I¨m 35 years old. I have a bicuspid artic valve with severe stenosis. I wrote other times but finaly my surgery date is the next 12/07/10. I think that choise a mechanical valve is the more durable option with less posibilitys of reoperations. The anticoagulation is not a problem for me. But I now that the noise of mechanical valves can afect de quality of life of patients, and more in the young adults groups. Please I will be acknowledge about your experience using this kind of valves. This is a very important and dificult desition for me.

Thanks

Cristian

Hi Cristian,
I have a St. Jude mechanical valve and I never hear it except when I go to bed. I sleep on my side, so when my head is on the pillow I can kind of hear it, but, for me, it's not loud or bothersome; it's just hearing my heartbeat. My old valve was much noisier! Maybe if I slept on my back I wouldn't hear it at all. I don't hear it at any other time.

I have a porcine valve and I can't hear a thing, it is as if I have my native AV. I know a redo is ahead, however this was a given when I received my porcine valve in 2004 at age 41.
I do not regret a redo is in my future. My aim was always to live as normal as possible life for my age. I have no other health issues other than the AVR.
Try riding track days on a MC at 200kph/120mph on ACT at the Phillip Island GP circuit.

Valve Noise - Quality of like issues?

Valve Noise - Quality of like issues?

Quality of life issues related to valve noise? I haven't had any.

Body acoustics vary from individual to individual...actually individual body acoustics can vary day to day. Even on days when I've been able to hear my valve click, I haven't experienced any negative quality of life issues. I think it would be a bit of an exaggeration to think you'll be in situations where the people around you will be trying to figure-out where that mysterious ticking/clicking noise is coming from.

I've really never had issues with valve click keeping me awake at night either. Sure, there are times when I notice the click, but it's really not any kind of major distraction.

The surgeon I am going with says he has good results with ATS and very few of his patients report "noise" - he likes the flow of this valve .... many people on here post and say they can "hear/feel" their mechanical valve - while I agree with you it will/woudl be annoying. I am going to vote with being "bothered" and feeling lucky to be alive if I hear it ticking!
