I have read much about the On-X valve... and from what I've read, I think I would favour it, over St-Jude's.

I was wondering if anyone knew if On-X was available in Canada?

Thanks!

Jeff

If you visit the On-X website you can contact the company directly through their North American toll-free query line. Good luck.

As an added thought, if you've been referred to a surgeon, perhaps you could ask your question at an appointment. I'm sure you want a valve that your surgeon is comfortable with, you may need to switch docs if you really want the On-X.

Take Heart,
Pamela.

Catheran Burnette at On-X is very helpful. If you send an e-mail from the On-X site she will likely receive it and get back to you. I don't know how often the On-X is used in Canada, but she will.

Thank you for the advice Pamela.

Although my surgery is still some 2 years away (according to my cardiologist), I was hoping the On-X would be available in Canada, so that the surgeons would already be familiar with it, by the time my turn comes up.

I think contacting the company regarding its availability (in Canada) will likely be my best bet, as I'm finding it difficult to determine online. Still, I was hoping someone on this forum might know? :)

Thanks for your response Pamela,

Jeff

Dear Bob,

That's the same Valve that I chose and I'm sure you can have it done in Canada, a friend of mine had hers done there by Dr Michael Chu Assistant Professor of Surgery
University Hospital London Ontario I believe ?

Hey another Canadian - Welcome here Jeffrey,
sorry I can't help with your quest, I have a Carbomedic, I'm here so I guess its working just fine :)

I agree with Pamela, talk to your surgeon and see what he is most comfortable with.

On-X has sold over 70,000 valves in 64 countries.

Catheran Burnett, RN, is their Manager of Education and Promotion. She can be contacted at [email protected] or 888-339-8000 ext 265 or 512-339-8000 ext 265.

Thank you for everyone's responses - I appreciate your insight!

As a follow-up to my original post in this thread, I contacted the manufacturer today (On-X Life Technologies), who informed me that there is indeed a distributor for their products in Canada.

Thanks again for everyone's responses,

Jeff

In case anyone is interested, this is the response received from the distributor in Canada...

Thank you for your interest in the new technology represented by the On-X valves.
This valve technology dates back to 1996 and has been available in Canada since late 1999.
There are thousands of Canadian patients living with aortic and mitral ON-X valves.
We encourage you to contact Dr David Ross, who has experience with the ON-X Heart valves at the University of Alberta.
His e-mail address is : [email protected] or [email protected].
His phone No is : 780 407 8047

Thanks again everyone!

Jeff

Hi Jeffrey,

So glad you had your question answered and it is available to you. I know that the surgeons at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute use the ON-X valve as the mechanical valve of choice for AVR.

Good luck!

Hey where's Zipper?
She had her surgery in Edmonton, Alberta. I know it was done at the University, not sure if it was called University of Alberta (thought maybe that would be in Calgary). Maybe she's knows something about this Dr. David Ross, heck it could have been this same surgeon she had, after her first surgeon she was suppose to have broke his leg.

Hey Zipper where are you?

The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is part of the Walter MacKenzie Health Sciences facility at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. From what I can tell, all of the cardio-thoracic surgeons on faculty and in practice at the UofA Hospital are fantastic. I'm sure you'll have access to some wonderful people with all the knowledge you need to bring you over the mountain.

Take Heart and I hope your research leads you to make the best decision for you.

Hi Everyone:

Yes, the On-X valve is also available in BC Canada at St.Pauls and Vancouver General, with a few surgeons using the valve.

The On-X was introduced into Royal Jubilee in Victoria last year, and just one surgeon has used it to date. Hopefully that will be two in the not to distant future.

Apparently 3000 On-X valves have been implanted in Canada in the last 10 years.
