My doctor has recommended that I take Omega 3 to treat my high cholesterol (287), LDL (230), and triglycerides (don't remember). (My HDL is 57, so that's good!) The posts that I've seen say it shouldn't affect my INR, but I will have it checked more often just to make sure. Luckily I had a test today and I plan to start Omega 3 in the next few days, so I have a good baseline. Personally, I still think that cholesterol is a myth to make more money for doctors and drug companies, but if I can get by with taking a minor supplement, I'll try it.

Anyway, does anyone recommend any particular brand? The nurse just said I can get it at GNC, but there are 5 pages of options! I hear that some make you have fishy burps!

Thanks.

Peter was on omega-3 prior to his surgery because of his cholesterol. He was told not to take them post-op as it could increase the blood-thinning effects of his meds.

The ones he used to take (and I take because of macula degeneration) is from vitacost - gel caps - no fishy after-taste: http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Mega-EFA-Omega-3-EPA-DHA-Value-Pack?csrc=GPF-835003006250 But they have plenty of others to choose from.

Coromega is a good liquid in convenient sachets but it does work out pricier: http://www.vitacost.com/productResults.aspx?ss=1&Ntk=products&Ntt=coromega

FWIW - both my surgeon and Cardiologist put me on Omaga-3. I've not had any interaction (that I know of) but I've been on O3 from the get go and stabilized with this supplement.

I have some now that just sent my INR to 4.1, but it's a combo of fish oil, flaxseed oil and Borage. I guess I was kind of asking for it.

Lisa,

I buy mine from Wally World. The BUBBA in me won't allow me to spend $45 to $50 for what I can pick up in Wally World for $5 or $6.:p MAKE SURE you get the COATED ONES!!!!! BURP!!!!!:eek: I know from previous discussions about this subject that some feel you are getting a safer product if you get those "SPECIAL PILLS" but mine seem to be working just find.

My cholesterol is down (from over 400+ to less than 200) and my LDL/HDL are within normal ranges. My triglycerides are spot on. Now I do also take Vytorin but even this was not getting my numbers down until my GP had me start the fish oil.

As I've been on them for a while they don't really figure into my INR (Dose the Diet).

Good Luck and,

May God Bless,

Danny :)

Im not sure about 'brands' , but Iv read somewhere you have to be careful because some can have high levels of mercury. I get mine on prescription from my gp.

What DOSE did your Doctor recommend?

I'm thinking that the usual dose for non-anticoagulated patients is 2000 mg. My Cardio recommended 1000 for me.

I've had NO fishy after-taste events.

Hi Lisa,I have been taking the flax seed oil which contains all 3 of the
omegas - 3,6, and 9 for the last year and my cholesterol which was borderline
high at 210,is now at 185. The omegas are also supposed to help the circulatory
system by keeping the veins elastic and smooth preventing
buildup and disease. Well, this is what I read in an herbal I have.
I have also taken the mixture that Ross mentioned, but usually stick to the
flax. You can buy it in oil, capsule or the seed which doesnt taste bad and
is also good for the GI system.

BTW..with flax you get no fishy taste and the same amount of omegas:)

I buy ground organic flax seed from Costco...whenever I need a hot drink, whether early in the morning or anytime during the dame, I boil water and use a tea spoon, more or less (as needed) + 1 t. honey and a dash of cinnamon instead of tea or coffee! I like the taste and the benefit:)

Yeah i bet its good like that,i'll have to try it.

Flaxseed is a great alternative if you are worried about mercury levels. My doctor (a vegetarian) recommended it to me for this exact reason. Emu oil is another good source, although I'm not sure if you'd be able to get hold of it as easily outside of Australia.

Personally I think it tastes just as bad as the fish oil... might have to try Eva's concoction ;)

Anna, try it ... I like the drink.

When I cook an omelette with eggwhites, I sprinkle some ground flaxseeds on the omelette before serving mixed with black pepper.

The pharmacist recommended the Omega 3-6-9, which is the combo that Ross referred to above - Fish Oil, Flax, and Borage. He said it shouldn't affect my INR. I'll test in a week to make sure. Thanks everyone.

The deal with fish vs. vegetable oil is that the fish oil reaches blood levels faster and stays there with less input. I've posted the science previously, if someone cares to search for it. Over the long haul, they're probably not that different in effectiveness. Watch out for overdoses of vitamin E, as some companies add this to the oil, and taking over 400 IU per day is associated with unexplained reduced lifespans.

Mercury levels are higher in farmed salmon, so if you look for fish oil (primarily salmonid oil) that is garnered from wild-caught fish, you lower any mercury content. You get more leaching from your old tooth fillings than this, though.

I buy the inexpensive wild-caught salmon oil and make sure I get over 1 gram a day of the Omega contents. It's not a one-for-one ratio of oil to Omega, so I take two big capsules. Yep, them burps can be pretty exciting. But it's much cheaper to buy, and just as good quality as the most expensive marketed product.

Best wishes,

gettin mine from WallyWorld, too. I found some that are a one a day sort (double the strength). I feel that as long as you are getting the mg amount you should, that ought to cover it. 1000mg is 1000mg, no matter where you get it. I'll go for the cheaper one.
