Hi everyone.

I am having AVR on 12/28 and then a couple of days after having an AICD implanted.

I was born (1974) with CoArc of the Aorta and Biscuspid AV. The CoA was fixed via CHS when I was 4. I went on about my life normally, got married, have 2 beautiful children, and forgot about the BV until my "new" PCP wouldn't let up about it in 2000. She sent me to a cardiologist just to get it checked and I had severe aortic stenosis and insufficiency and the valve was fusing shut. They were able to repair it in 2001 with OHS instead of replacing it. The repair left me with a leak and the leak has caused arrhythmia which then required the AICD after I had an EP Study in April 04 and was paced into VT/VFib. The AICD came out in Feb 05 thanks to Endocarditis in my Mitral Valve??? Not Aortic Valve??? Weird!!?anyway?here I am now with the doctors telling me I must have the AICD back in (even though it never shocked me and paced only .1% of the time), but that my valve will eventually need to be replaced and it would be better to have that done first and then the AICD put back in. The reasoning being b/c when they replace the valve, the heart is moved around so much that the pacing wires would come loose. I have chosen a Mechanical Valve, but am unsure about taking coumadin. I am having surgery at Ark. Children?s Hospital which is where I was before and they are wonderful and supposedly among the best in the country. I am just so uncertain and uneasy about the whole thing. I feel fine! I know I need this surgery eventually b/c of what test say, but I just don?t know about having it now. And will the AICD give me Endocarditis again? I really hated that thing. It?s really uncomfortable.

I can?t meet with my surgeon until the day before my surgery. I have kids that need their mommy and my husband has heart problems also. (His are from blockage caused by stress on the job and unhealthy eating habits & high blood pressure, not congenital). He is all fixed now though with diet, meds, exercise, & massages. Hehe! I was only in the hospital for 4 days on my last OHS, and I was back at work after 3 weeks. I am hoping it goes that quick this time also. I am just so concerned with the coumadin though and having to keep up with that. I have way too much to keep up with already. I read Al?s website about coumadin and all that. I just hope and pray that I don?t have any of those bleeding problems. I am wondering if I should go with a tissue valve instead now, but I know for a fact I never ever want to have OHS again?so that?s the reason for going with the mechanical one.

Thank you for any responses and God Bless you all.

Welcome, Dinah.

Valve choice is one of the most difficult thing many of our members deal with. There are certainly pros and cons to each kind. Of course, the big "con" for you for a tissue valve is yet another ohs.

Others will come along soon with their opinions; just remember, no one makes a bad choice - because without the replacement we simply wouldn't be here.

For mos of us, coumadin isn't a big deal most of the time. With the support and advice available here, it isn't too problematic at all. Of course there are issues; I just choose to ignore them until I can't.

Best of luck. You're having your surgery on my daughter's birthday - a good day all 'round!

Dinah:

Good luck with your surgery. You'll do fine with the anticoagulation, once you understand it.
You probably **are** having symptoms of the BAV problem now, you've just adjusted to it. Many of us here did that for a long time, some for years, and then wham! you can't ignore it any longer. Best to get something fixed while you're young and before your heart is permanently damaged.

Sounds like you've chosen an excellent hospital. I've seen Arkansas Children's Hospital on quite a few Discovery Health programs and have been quite impressed.

Hello, Dinah, and welcome to our forum. You have certainly found the right place for lots of support and guidance. I'm so sorry that both you and your husband are having cardiac issues at the same time. Just like you, my husband and I both faced surgeries/procedures within two years of each other -- he a bone marrow transplant and me the valve surgery. Our boys were very young at the time, but now it's just a distant memory for them. Kids are resilient.

It sounds like you've done your research and will be ready when the time comes. We will be here in support and will look forward to seeing you on the other side of the mountain.

Hi Dinah. Welcome to this wonderful place. You have been through so much already and I don't hear an ounce of trepidation about having to go through more -- just some frustrations about choice! You are very brave!! I'm just now getting stenotic enough to have made an appointment with a surgeon for aortic valve replacement due to bicuspid gone bad.

It sounds as if you are under some time constraints. My first impression is that you don't have enough talk time with your surgeon before your surgery. I understand that you are very busy (I have 3 kids, all in college now and out of state. I was a stay at home mom) and especially during the holidays, it's very crazy. But YOU need to put yourself on the front burner. YOU are the top priority right now. You need to be comfortable with the answers you've found for yourself.

Maybe you could call the surgeon and set up a phone consultation. Be ready with, I don't know, 5 questions, paper and pen. If he cannot do that, try a nurse. Just call the office and go through them one by one. I have found that at least at my cardiologist's office, there is one very wonderful nurse who seems brilliant and abundantly helpful. She is who I ask for each time.

I won't see my surgeon until January 9th and I'm hoping to have surgery in late March. I am going into that meeting adamant about tissue valves but I know that if my surgeon presents a good enough argument (I'll be 52) I'll be going with a mechanical. I know that even if the coumadin proves to be a hassle, I'll be able to muddle through anything with the knowledge and experience I can find here at vr.com. This community is THAT helpful. And open 24 hours!!

You have multiple complexities here. There are alot of folks here on vr.com who have wonderful lives because of their mechanical valves. Please keep reading, here and start new threads with new quesitons!!! There's so much info here.

And also. I read your husband's thread and almost cried. It was so sweet!! You two have a very, very special relationship. How very lucky you both are. Stay positive, both of you. I'm sure it will be tough going, but the strength in your love is going to be the best medicine!! :D

Best wishes!!

Marguerite

Good Luck!!

Good Luck!!

Merry Christmas Dinah! Wow, what a busy Christmas you will have! You said in your post that you feel great. It seems that women are too busy to notice symptoms and to excuse the symptoms as part of motherhood- especially with two young children. I really didn't notice mine until I went Christmas shopping with a friend and couldn't keep up with her. We literally "shopped til I dropped" that day! :) Your children are actually at an age that they will be a big help with you post op. You will be in my thoughts and prayers on the 28th.

Dinah, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hoping the valve job is an easy one for you,(Mine wasn't so easy for the surgeon, but wasn't bad for me). A new valve should give you a nice new lease on life! It does take time to get back up and running. Take the time, do your walks and the spirometer! All the best, Brian
