Hello all,

My recent and unexpected (I suppose everyone's diagnosis was unexpected) diagnosis of aortic regurgitation came before I was able to secure life insurance. I applied to my home insurance carrier in January and, after 3 months, they've just come back and rejected my application. Still trying to get a reason. In the meantime, I wanted to ask if anyone out there has been able to get life insurance post their diagnosis, and what the carrier might be? I realize everyone's circumstances are different, but I'm going to keep trying and would like to start with a carrier who has underwritten life insurance for people with this diagnosis in the past.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Mine was not since my diagnosis but I took out a massive policy a few years ago and had significant health problems, like diabetes and blood in my urine (turned out to be kidney stones), also high blood pressure, I was also very overweight. I know that to get a full payout I have to live about 16 years from the date of the policy, otherwise the payout is much reduced.

Have you thought of asking for exclusions, so if you were to die of cancer rather than heart-related problems they would pay out?

Hi. I'm sure I was post diagnosis, but for me the diagnosis then was simply bicuspid aortic valve. All measures were in the normal range at that time and there was no stenosis. I have a much smaller policy than my husband (he's the breadwinner) and cannot remember the particulars. We use Metropolitan Life.

I'm sure it is frustrating for you....keep this thread alive, though, as I think it will help others, and, I think there are insurance people amongst us.

Good luck! Marguerite

The only insurance I have ever been able to get was my default life insurance through my employer. Even applying for additional insurance at work was denied by our carrier. Fortunately they can't revoke the basic life. It's only 1.5 times my salary but at least it's something.

I couldn't even get mortgage insurance.

I just searched on Google the words 'life insurance heart problems' and it looks as if you could get lucky. The first one that I looked at has the following....

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada can give you a list of insurance companies who are sympathetic to people with heart conditions. The Grown Up Congenital Heart Patients' Association can give advice on the types of life insurance available and provide details of companies that may consider life insurance for people in 'high risk' categories.

If you have heart condition, had a heart attack or have had heart surgery and your heart condition is now under control, you could be eligible for great rates for life insurance. An insurance exam and your medical records could determine that you are insurable and eligible for some good savings on your life insurance.

So, if you have a heart condition and are looking for life insurance please start by filling out the form above. We will have a qualified representative that will get back to you.

Many insurance companies out there will not deal with someone that has any history of heart issues. I found the easiest way to get insurance was to go through a broker. They deal with multiple companies and usually know which ones will insure which people. I had used selectquote and was very happy, they had been able to get me a $2M policy with a company at reasonable rates.
They will contact your doc and get information so be prepared for that.

Good luck.

We used WESTERN RESERVE LIFE (WRL) took out a million with no problems and at a reasonable rate. Good Luck!
