Well, I called my PCP to tell him about my squamous cell CA and to let him know that I didn't want to come off my coumadin to have the scheduled surgery. He said he wanted to see me anyway before I left for Mexico again therefore I had an appointment this morning.

He agreed that there was greater risk of coming off the coumadin than having the surgery without it. He said that the worst case scenario would probably entail having to receive fresh frozen plasma and that the coagulation effect of that doesn't last more than twelve hours. He told me though to be prepared for some big time brusing since the upper lip and surrounding area can bleed quite freely.

We talked about the mesenteric embolus I had in January and I could tell he remains nervous about that. Because of that he wants me to stay well anti-coagulated. I have his blessing to keep adjusting my coumadin to try to stay around 3.5 to 4.0.

We leave in a couple of days for about three weeks. He asked if I had any trouble traveling with my pro-time monitor, which I have not. He also warned me about faithfully wearing lotion and a wide brimmed hat and staying out of the sun as much as possible. I really appreciate that he never tries to talk me out of traveling. He just asked me if my Spanish was good enough to ask where the nearest hospital is.

He also wants me to use name brand coumadin. I didn't have the heart to tell him about the studies so I just kept quiet. He is a real good doctor and I can't expect him to be up on everything.

Betty,

Glad to hear that your surgeon is working with you on the anti-coagulant issues. You'll probably bleed and bruise more. Oh well.

As for Mexico, I assume that you are flying from NC. Did yyou get a look at Rain's post in Samll Talk?:D

Have a great time in Mexico.. Let us know when you return home and your surgery date. Will you still be going to Duke? Have fun and remember us poor cold friends..back at home.:p :p What brand coumadin do you take? I take Barr..Just returned home and took my INR 3.2..Up from 2.7 where I had been for several months..I like it there..now I can have some cabbage with my cornbeef on St. Paddy's Day:D :D We were in Savannah, Ga. last week..They have one of the largest St. Patty's Day.Dye the river green, ect. Bonnie

I ate lunch today with Mary Elizabeth O'Laughlin from Savannah. She can't remember when she started marching the the St. Patrick's Day Parades.

Gran - Barr doesn't make Coumadin, only BMS does that. Barr makes generic warfarin.

Betty,
I'm glad your doctors have a handle on this coumadin thing. I would imagine this makes you feel pretty assured going into the procedure.

Have a great time in Mexico - send any extra sun up to Chicago please!

Hi Betty,

Sending positive thoughts your way for a stress free proceedure. Have a wonderful time in Mexico. You will have to tell us all about your ventures when you return!

Did you ever consider Lovenox injections? They worked like a charm for me in the past!

Hi Gina,

I was on the Lovenox for about three weeks in January. I still have shadows of brusing from them. I think it would be more complicated if I had to do that again. I would have if my PCP would have thought that was the better route but I feel pretty comfortable with the idea of staying on my coumadin.
