Anyone here have any problems with Adult onset Diabetes? Seems my last 2 sets of labs, my glucose levels have been high.

I do know someone. Mid 70's with that issue. They claim with a little weight control the levels may be resolved.

I am type II diabetic, diagnosed 6 years ago. It wasn't connected to my heart as I didn't have problems with that until last year.

Are you saying that you are already diabetic and that your last two tests have been abnormally high, or are you saying that your glucose levels are high so could you be diabetic?

Last year my glucose levels were far too high, I am diet controlled and was about to ask to go onto medication even though I had been fighting that for years. I put it down to stress as that can send the reading high, now I know it was in fact endocarditis - any illness can send it high. Once my infection was gone my glucose levels dropped again.

My brother was diagnosed w/ type II diabetes a little over a year ago. He was sent to a dietician who advised him to limit his carb intake, eat more vegetables and less junk food. At the time he remarked, "who knew it was a bad idea to eat a bag of Doritos before dinner!?" (I thought that was hilarious) His dietary changes amount to simply giving some thought to what he puts in his body instead of indulging his cravings--nothing terribly drastic--and his blood sugar has been fine since. He does monitor his own blood sugar.

Never been diagnosed as being diabetic. Adult onset diabetes runs on both sides of my family. I've changed my diet since the heart attack and valve replacement but I can see where there are still things that could be changed relating to blood sugar. Bad thing about it, things that are low fat are almost always high in sodium and or Sugar. I had the borderline sugar thing going on before I knew about the heart troubles.

Thanks for the replies!

"Low Fat"/High Junk

"Low Fat"/High Junk

John,

I'm type 2 diabetic but that was coming on before the VR and not really related. With diet and exercise, I have brought the blood glucose levels back down below the danger zone. But it's a constant struggle. You are so right about foods labeled "low fat" -- they are often chocked with sugar and sodium, and high on carbs, just the sort of thing we should avoid. So low fat is not necessarily good. Have to read the labels carefully.

Cheers,

Bob

I have a friend who has it. He was always active. He is, however, old and it came on when he began to get old. These days he eats healthy foods - like salads, vegetables and takes his medicine. He seems to be living with it ok.

My glucose test came back borderline pre-diabetic last May and with diet and exercise (loss 18 pounds) I brought the numbers down to an acceptable level on my last test in November, but still have to watch it. I switched to whole wheat bread and stay away from sweets- no more desserts which are my favorite part of the meal.:( Heck, if I had my way, they would be the only part of the meal!

I "failed" a glucose tolerance test a few years back and my pcp wanted me to go on meds. Instead I signed up for a study at UCLA medical center. It was a 6 month study where those of us involved determined by eating and testing just what our bodies reacted to from a glucose standpoint. We found that each of us often reacted to different foods (as well as the same ones). My biggest downfall was potatoes and white sugar (no suprise there). Interestingly enough, I did not react too strongly to raw sugar, dark chocolate, or fruits which often caused major problems in the others.

I think of the study as I would an allergy test series. Once you find out what causes problems, you can treat appropriately. I hope this may become commonplace so people can be less restrictive in their diets when possible.

Now that I know what I can and can't eat, I have no problems unless I cheat. I do test my glucose occasionally but it has been under control for years now.

Oh my, Gina- potatoes are the one thing I have refused to give up- I think they are even higher on my "must have" list then dessert. Since, the glucose level came down, maybe I can continue to get away with it.:D
