Is it true that if you choose to receive a mechanical mitral valve and later you have to have a reoperation, it is then not possible to get a tissue mitral valve?

Thank you in advance,

Juan

Nope, not true. In fact, I think there's some people on here who did just that. If I am 70+ when I need my next op, I'm strongly considering tissue.

No that isn't true I know a few people that have done it. What someone MIGHT have referred to is if you get a tissue valve, chances are you can have it replaced by cath in the future, but IF you get a mech valve they can't replace them by cath (at least the way they are doing cath replacements now)

Where have you seen this information. I assumed that either would ryle out a cath delivered one later. I am getting a tissue valve on the 30th,

for the cath replacements they squish the old valve tightly against the side of the walls with the stent that holds the new valve, you can't squish the metal leaflets. They already have replaced tissue valves by cath and as a matter of fact they have alread replaced percutaneous valves with NEW percutaneous valves in the pulm valve trials.

Got any linkage on this deal?

This is one of the information "gems" I picked up on this forum. I'm elated to know that there is a possible, or probable, chance that I could get a tissue valve should I ever need a reop in my old age.

I don't know about the mitral valve, but I went from mechanical to tissue and recently back to mechanical.

If you are asking about the tissue valves being able to be replaced percutaneously, one of the criteria for the percutaneous pulm replacement is you already have to have a conduit (and the great majority of RVOT conduits have valves) http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00740870?term=melody&rank=2
Criteria
Inclusion Criteria:

Age greater than or equal to 5 years of age
Weight greater than or equal to 30 kilograms
Existence of a full (circumferential) RVOT conduit that was equal to or greater than 16mm in diameter when originally implanted.

and for the already have replaced percutaneous valves in older percutaneous valves one of the places is the webcast video from the 2008 AATS by Philipp Bonhoeffer, M.D. of Great Ormond (they've been doing them from about 2000)
http://www.aats.org/2008webcast/sessions/player.html?sid=08050105.04 IF you don't want to watch the whole video click on slide 16 and the next couple are about it

IF that link doesn't go right to the video here is the list of videos http://www.aats.org/2008webcast/ and the pulm one is under Sunday the 5th one down under Congenital Heart Symposium
