I pulled a boo-boo yesterday!
I had a dental cleaning appointment scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Had it on my calendar. Doctor's office manager called last Thursday to remind me and asked if I had my antibiotics.
"Yes, they're in my desk drawer," I said.
Got to my appointment yesterday, sat in the chair and the hygienist began cleaning my teeth. I suddenly thought of Ross and his upcoming dental extractions and realized: I FORGOT TO TAKE MY MEDS!!!!!!

The hygienist thought I could take my 2,000mg of amoxi ASAP afterward (I had some in my car). But Dr. Cox said no, because I had a valve replacement and mechanical at that. We'd just reschedule, he said.
(I'm his only patient with a mechanical heart valve, I learned.)
I was soooo embarrassed. Was my face RED!!!!

I'm at the top of the list two weeks from now in case there's a cancellation. And I've written it on my calendar in RED to take my meds.

And to think:
1. One hour before the appointment, I thought needed to be doing something but couldn't remember what it was.
2. If I hadn't thought of Ross, I would have just gone through the entire appointment without remember the forgotten meds.

Honestly I think that if you had them in the car, you could have taken them and been fine. I really don't see the differnce in taking them before or after. They still have to do the same job.

Many, many years ago before OHS, I showed up once for my cleaning and forgot to take my meds.
Dentist had some in his cabinet, glared at me, I took them, and waited until he finished another patient, then he cleaned my teeth.
Since then I mark it in BIG letters on my agenda, and I leave the pill bottle out beside the agenda.
Post OHS, I have remembered.....but s--t happens.

Sometimes I just fib and say i took them... I'm not overly concerned about this stuff, considering what I've been cut/lacerated/burned with. Maybe i just got lucky all those times...

I'm definitely still going to take the pre-meds when I remember, but I don't always remember.

When we all decide to operate on you again we will definitely make sure you are VERY medicated.:D

I've been premedicating for 18 years and this is the first time I've forgotten. I've been going to Dr. Cox since I moved to the Fort Worth area 30 years ago and he's been pretty good to me all these years, so I can't complain about having to reschedule the appointment.

I didn't realize at the time that I had some amoxi in my car until I got home.

I usually keep the bottle that's in my desk beside my keyboard the day I have a dental. But yesterday was wild at work. It was like a full moon  -- which is in another week.

Marsha, I know there is controversy on what is actually still needed but I have them so I take them. Ross, as far as the Aricept goes....do you think we could get a group discount?

My cardiologist is insisting on intravenous cover with gentamicin if I have my teeth cleaned. My dentist cannot give that to me, by law, so I am now having to go to the hospital to see the dental surgeon there (for free) and he is checking me every six months to see if they need cleaning. If they do he will do it for me, again for free. If my own dentist was permitted to do it then it would be costly. My own dentist still checks me and can do fillings, just nothing invasive. I am due at the hospital on Thursday this week for my check.

I am a coward, I would reschedule no matter how inconvenient. I won't have my teeth cleaned without having had the antibiotics for one hour in my blood stream. 18 years ago I forgot to take them and the dentist gave to me some from his office, and I felt very fatigued afterwards for a while and did not go back to my previous energy level--this could be in my head:confused:. I won't take any chances that may lead to deterioration of any valves. I hope my heart will last me until I die without the need for another OHS!!!!:eek:

I would not have proceeded with the cleaning if I realized I had forgotten. to premedicate. Why take the risk? I definitely would reschedule.

I do like others have written and leave the antibiotic bottle beside my calendar the few days prior to my appointment so I won't forget. I haven't forgotten yet but it is sure to happen one of these days.

Beside me, my dentist has only one other patient that has to be pre-med before anything. I'm SURE he wouldn't touch me if I hadn't taken the antibiotics 1 hour before hand.
If something was to go wrong, its the only way for him to save his butt from getting sued. (those are his words, not mine)

I seem to remember Kristy (or is it Kirsty?) saying that you can take the meds immediately before the dentist gets to work. She had some reference or article that she got the info from, plus she works for a dentist.

Where are you girl?...help us out here.

Marsha,

I did something similiar this last cleaning. I forgot to refill my prescription and didn't realize it until I went to take them the morning of my cleaning. :eek:I called the dentist office to cancel, and they said they said not to worry, they could give them to me when I got in. :) The dentist reassured me that it would be okay. They waited about 15 minutes and proceeded with my cleaning. Everything was fine. As soon as I left the dentist office I filled my new prescription!

Before my OHS, my meds were usually bought a couple of days before my appt. Now I've realized that it's a good idea to always have them "on hand" just in case I break off a tooth, or need to go in for something urgent.
