Hi everyone I am so happy to have found this wonderful board. You are all a Godsent to me. I found you searching on the internet because my 79 year old mom is going to have her valve replaced on Jan. 23 at St. Peters Hospital in Albany NY I just needed answers and I am the type of person that likes to know whats going on, thats how I found this board I was so scared for her because of her age but many people have told me that even older people get this procedure and that put me to rest a little I still cant help but to feel helpless sometimes..

Hi and Welcome!

When I had my replacement, I shared a room with a 90 year old lady who was back for her second valve replacement! She had her aortic valve first replaced at the age of 80!
Although your mom is 78, she should do well. We're here to answer questions and to give you a place to share your feelings.:)

Welcome. I am from your area. St. Peter's Hospital has a terrific heart surgery reputation. Your mom will be in the best of hands there. It is true that heart valve surgery is done on older folks too. The surgery has a very excellent mortality rate, the surgeons are fantastic and she will get the very best care the hospital has to offer.

Please take a LOT of time to read as many posts as you can.

They may be scary at first, but forge on, and soon you will see a pattern develop as to what to expect with the pre-surgery phase, recovery phase and beyond. Knowledge is extremely important for you and also for what you can share with your mom. It will help to mitigate your fears and put your mind somewhat at rest.

This site is the best source of information and support.

Welcome

Welcome

We'll keep your mom in our thoughts and prayers Jan. 23. By the way, which valve is being replaced? In the meantime, enjoy spending time with your mom and keep her busy, but rested. You will find this site a wealth of information and support. God bless you and your mom!

Thank you all for your replies my mom is having her aortic valve replaced and she also is getting a cyro maze procedure done the same time for her AF, her surgeon said he will only do this if it is safe to do so..

God Bless You All Hugs Carolyn

Hi Carolyn...and Hi to your mum :D

I just wanted to welcome you to this wonderful second-home of ours !

I am in the waiting-room as we call it here ...and its a great place to meet lots of lovely people who are going or have been through the same..

Prayers going out for you both and especially your mum, although after you have a look around here you may realise its the carers of us who seem to have a hard time while we sleep blissfully through these surgeries.

welcome
