New savings on warfarin!

On the news this week: Sam's Club and Wal-Mart stores are expanding their $4/mo list of generic drugs.

John went to Sam's earlier today and picked up an expanded list of the $4 dugs.
They had been offering 30 tabs of 5mg warfarin for $4. Now you can get all strengths of warfarin -- 1, 2, 2.5, 4, 5, 6, 7.5 & 10 for $4. (NOTE: list from Sam's Club says that 5mg of warfarin is higher than $4 in CO, CA, HI, MN, MT, PA, TN, WI and WY)

I had been mail-ordering my warfarin from Medco Health, 90 tabs of 1, 2 & 10mg, for $20 per scrip. I take 6-6.5 daily, usually 6.5, so I'd get 6 months out of each bottle. That translates to $120 a year for my warfarin.

I can whittle that down to $72 a year by switching to Sam's Club or a Wal-Mart. 30 tabs of 1, 2 and 10 will last me 60 days and cost me $12. I would need 6 refills in a year, which would run me $72 and would save me $48.

Even if I got a 6mg Rx @ $4/mo ($48 annually), I'd still need 1mg tabs ($4 X 12 mo = $48), so that run up to $96 annually.

Will be calling my PCP this next week to get new Rxes for my warfarin!

Good News!

We have had an awful time with Innoviant mail order pharmacy. They took it upon themselves to discontinue Nathan's 5.0 mg of Warfarin when I requested and sent an RX for 2.5mg tabs, in addition to the 5.0 mg. I look foward to going back to a local pharmacy. Sounds like it will be Walmart for us

How many mg / Week do you take?

I'm confused about your selection of 1,2, and 10 mg if you are running between 6 and 6.5 mg/day.

It would seem that you could achieve your weekly target by an appropriate alternation of 6 and 7.5 mg tablets at only ONE tablet per day..

6X7 = 42
7.5X7 = 52.5

Alternating would allow you to increment in steps of 1.5 mg/ week

(42, 43.5, 45, 46.5, 48, 49.5, 51, 52.5)
where the number of days on 7.5 mg would be
(0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

I almost always take 6.5mgX7. Occasionally I drop back to 6.0 for a week or two, then go back to 6.5mg. I prefer to take the same dosage X7 rather than rotating dosages. Yes, it does add up to the same amount over a week's time, but I didn't go beyond college algebra for my B.A. in journalism.

I get 1s, 2s and 10s so I can halve them and stretch the order twice as far. I've paid $120/year for my warfarin this way (2 orders of each strength) through Medco Health vs. buying 4 orders of 90 tabs of 6mg ($80/year) + 4 orders of 90 tabs of 1mg ($80/year) = $160 to get 6.5mg. If I had to drop down to 5mg for a while because of any Rx I'd have to start, then I'd be up a creek.

Buying and halving the 1s, 2s and 10s has enabled me to get just about any dosage I might possibly need. When I switched to this method of ordering my warfarin, my PCP thought it was smart -- says he encourages patients on meds long-term to do the same to save $$, if the Rx comes in scored tablets.

Seems that Minnesota doesn't allow the $4 charge for these, so you might check with a local Wal-Mart or Sam's to see what the price is there. Target is big in Minnesota (I think it's corp. headquarters are in MN), so you might also check with a Target store.

I'd prefer to deal with a local pharmacy because the big mail-order houses aren't customer-conscious. They just fill Rxes, don't bother to e-mail or call if there's a question about it. And I have had one major problem with Medco Health on a Fosamax Rx.

I'll check w/ Wal-Mart in Hudson Oaks TX to see if they too will fill an Rx for 90 tabs at a time and charge 3x$4.

John took a scrip for 90 tabs of 5mg, I think, to Wal-Mart sometime this summer and they would only fill it for 30 tabs at a time. Maybe they've changed their policies since.

I get Warfarin 5mg from Walmart in Kentucky. The cost is $12 for 90 tablets. The manufacturer is Taro.

I've been getting Taro through Medco Health. Never had a problem, even when switching from Coumadin trade name to generic warfarin.

Marsha, I don't know about Walmart sometimes. I tried to buy Claritin-D for my son and they would only sell one box at a time. I support the war on drugs, but golly, 15-day supply at a time is dumb. The clerk looked like she was 15 and it was near closing time.

TARO is manufactured in Israel.
BARR is manufactured in the USA.

I was stable on (Brand Name) Coumadin,
I was stable when I switched to Generic Warfarin
made by TARO after my insurance would no longer pay more than the cost of generic, and I am now stable on BARR, after my company switched mail order providers.

I believe all three are GOOD, SAFE, and RELIABLE products. I saw NO CHANGES when switching suppliers.
