Dr. Stupid

Hi all,
New member here from the UK. I had an aortic valve replacement back in June 2001, with a mechanical valve. I do my usual gym routine with some weights. Doctor doesn't seem to mind that. It's good to see so many people running marathons and the like. I have myself penciled in for a 10k run in September, a half marathon in October and hopefully a full marathon next year.
Does anybody out there have any training tips ?
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the group.
My first questions would be how much of a running background do you have and how much are you running now?
Unless you have a good base to work from, going from a 10K to a half marathon in a month's time might be a bit aggressive and make you more susceptible to injury.
I currently run 5K's in sprint triathlons, but am planning to run a half-marathon next May. I'll start building my training mileage after the triathlon season ends in December. I'm using Jeff Galloway's method which includes incorporating walking breaks into my long runs.
Good luck,
Mark

Hi Mark

Hi Mark

Thanks for your reply. Currently I do a five mile circuit of my town in around 40-45 mins. I am picking this up to 4 times a week now, with a longer run for the weekend. Will probably fit in some cycling as well. I prefer cycling, but they don't seem to have the races over here in which to enter.
For me, this is more of a personal challenge, as opposed to winning with record breaking times. I am hoping for a sub 2hrs 30 mins for the half marathon.
Any advice would be more than welcome.
Paul

Welcome, Dr. Nice to have you amongst us here in VR. There are several members who do the things you do and they will probably be along before the day is out to give you the benefit of their knowledge.

We are suffering for you over there. Terrorism is awful.
