Oh great...I just ordered the original today...oh well. :(
Roger,

You will be very happy with the original which is still a wonderful machine. The main difference I can see is the new one is smaller but the original is still very small and portable. Don't worry about it.

This is listed as some improvements...

* No need for external liquid quality control or extra strips
* No need for separate device to check electronic controls
* Test Strips do not require refrigeration
* Test Strips are individually wrapped
* Small one drop (15µL) sample size

Roger:

Those aren't "improvements." The above apply to the original one, too. At least, they can be kept at a certain temp for up to 1 year, I believe.
However, I do keep the extras in the refrigerator. I keep 2 in the little zippered pouch in the case, 1 to use and 1 as a backup in case I screw up. ;)

Thanks Catwoman!

What's the liquid quality control all about?

Gee, I don't remember any instructions to keep the test strips in the fridge for the INRatio! Raytel has sent 6 mos. supply at a time, and I just bought a box of 48 for my new machine (which should arrive tomorrow:D). I'll re-check the instructions!

When it first came out, that was the recommendation from Hemosense. It's changed over the years.

Sounds like there was some *liberty* taken by marketing...

Coaguchek used to have an ISI of 2 and ran liquid controls to calibrate the machine. INRation has always had an ISI of 1 and the controls have always been built into the test strips. Coaguchek is now doing the same thing.

Yes, the Coaguchek XS now has built in quality controls, one blood drop sampling, super long life batteries, and the kit holds an air tight tube of 24 strips which lasts me one year. It really looks like the INRatio too, very portable.

Yeah, Ross, I hear ya. I saw the new INRatio2 when I was shopping, but I think $800 is quite enough to spend thanks, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. QAS and Raytel, etc. don't even post their prices on line. You have to call them to find out they are pillaging.

And I like the old machine just fine.

Besides, my cell phone's bluetooth earbud has one button control too, and I HATE it. The durned think sits in my purse, supposedly on Off, and repeatedly redials the last number the phone dialed. I can't tell you how many times my husband has called me to tell me the stupid phone is calling him repeatedly (usually while I'm at dog class, bark bark bark). Yeah, one button wonders, no thanks.

I have one of the original INRatio meters and got bent when I learned there was a new revision to the firmware until I found out what it was. Funny thing is, I forget now, but thought I'd send mine in for the firmware update until they told me and it made no difference to me. Not worth being without the meter for it anyway.

Hey Hemosense Brendon, there is my idea of the century! Updatable by web from your technical pages. :D

I have an original one too & I agree w/Gina --- the "old" one is still very compact & it works great. I keep it in the case that it came with along with the lancets & the launcher. The strips I keep in the box on top of my kitchen counter.

I'm sure you'll be very happy with it! :)

The first monitor I purchased thru CoaguCheck, you had to conduct 2 tests prior to testing your blood. It consisted of 2 viles that you had to break in half, one had a solution in it & the other one, believe it or not, had "dried up rabbit brains" & you had to mix them to conduct the tests. I am NOT kidding!!! The machine was a nightmare! I experienced more stress out of that whole ordeal than I did over my OHS!!! :(

I was finally able to send it back to the company & they reimbursed me a little less than 1/2 of what I had paid for it & then I ordered the one I have now which I think is a God send! :)

I surprised they even tried to market something like that to the public...

It was probably the same exact thing that was used in labs at that time.

I thought the same thing when my dad showed me the contact lenses he was issued by the Air Force in the late 1940s. I was horrified. Not long ago I did an online search about the history of contact lenses, and sure enough, they were HUGE at one time. You could only wear them for a few hours at a time.

Technological advancements make things more comfortable, smaller, cheaper, etc., etc.
