Well Im Kurt Jims son....and Jim is 80 yo.
My dad just recieved a pacemaker 3 weeks ago. NOW they want to add a new mitral valve.
He is very apprehensive.
seeking realtime info and experiences so what topic is best to start in is my first question.

Right here is fine.

What's on your mind?

I mean we all here have had the surgery to replace a valve and go on. I'll admit 80 is old to be doing this but so much depends on general health which you haven't mentioned. There is a million and one possible questions so what is yours?

Did they discuss the difference with Tissue versus Mechanical valves?

Do you know if he will be on Coumadin?

When do they want the surgery to occur?

I suggest go through this forum and learn and don't be afraid to ask questions.

My name is Trina,31 I had Mitral Valve Replacement and Tricuspid repair on May 3,2016.I have a mechanical valve and I am very happy with this decision.

Feel free to ask,no question is silly.

Hi Kurt,

My stepfather had his mitral valve replaced at age 76. He is now 89 and his heart is doing fine. He chose a mechanical valve, which is an uncommon choice for a 76-year-old, but he is happy with his choice and is managing fine on Coumadin.

For your father's very understandable apprehensiveness, I would recommend reading people's accounts of their surgeries in the "Post Surgery" forum here. The sticky topics in the "Pre Surgery" and "Post Surgery" forums are useful too, especially the ones on what to take to the hospital, what questions to ask the surgeon, and what surprised people about their surgical experiences. This is all frightening and new right now, but the more the two of you learn about what people's experiences have been, the less at sea you'll feel.
