So as you folks may not know, I'm a big dork. My latest dorky endeavor has been the pursuit of Scrabble greatness. I started playing a bunch about 18 months ago, but lost interest pretty quickly. But, since my surgery, I've had lots of time at home and have rekindled my passion for the game. I am playing every day either online, with my friend Kevin, or at the local club meeting here in Denver.

With all that aside, I've decided to make it my dork-tastic goal to play in the 2009 National Scrabble Championship in Dayton, OH, August 1-5. It is an open tournament, with 6 divisions (Division 1 being the best, 6 the "worst"). Because I have never played in a tournament and am not a member of the National Scrabble Association yet, I will most likely play in the bottom division. I am making it my goal to finish in the top 10 (there will probably be around 100 players in the division) in my division.

I wanted to put this out there because I'd really like to be held accountable for reaching this goal. SO, even if you think it's a bit asinine, please bug me about my studying. I have put together a study program for myself and I intend to keep it. So, feel free to ask me if I've done my words for the day, because that's the only way I'll be able to reach this goal.

Thanks!

Good luck with your quest, which I deem to be cool! I will check in every now and then to follow your progress. Okay, have you studied yet?

I've always liked Scrabble and own 2 sets, but haven't played in years.

When John & I got married, my co-workers had a cake made for us that had a Scrabble game on the top. Don't remember what the words in the game were.

Have fun working on attaining Scrabble greatness!!!!

fair point, Bina!

looks like ANEURYSM and ANEURISM are both good.

Sounds like a good goal. Remember to study a bit every day with lots of repetition!!!

as third place winner in my jr high school spelling bee, I highly encourage you to follow your heart in this endeavor. It behooves you to get out your scrabble dictionary(ies) to bone up on all those words most of us never heard of. Scrabble is so much fun. And then learn how to get doubles, triples and any other advantages you can get against your opponent.

At my 50th class reunion I hooked up with a guy I'd known since 6th grade - we played a couple of games of scrabble. He won by a hair's breadth.

go for it.
