Just a quick update on my nephew. He had to be intubated at 3am this morning because of difficulty breathing. They are doing an echo today to check for a possible PDA (whole in the heart that is supposed to close at birth). They have started him on caffiene treatments as well. Will keep you posted.

I went in for a follow up urine test today for my bladder infection that postponed my surgery. They are going to send it out to the lab but at this point is showing blood and protein in my urine so it sounds like I will have to go through another round of antibiotics. I had her do a strep test right away because of this nasty cold and sore throat I have. I will have more answers on Monday. Until then.... I wait some more.

I'm sending prayers up for baby Nicholas. We encountered problems several months ago when our grandson was born, and I well remember what it's like to go through something such as this.

Thank you Mary... My husband and I had a preemie (26 weeker) almost 7 yrs ago so It's nice to be able to know what my sister is going through and explain things in lamans terms when a doctor tells her something. I know he will be ok. Sounds like my sister is going home tomorrow.

I hate it when it's the little ones that go through this crap. I'll step my prayers up a few notches also.

Sending more prayers for the baby. His Guardian Angel is standing by his bed to keep him safe.

On to you, what antibiotics are they giving you? I had a bladder infection right before my surgery, my PCP gave me a prescription for Lavaquin (spelling) cleared the darn thing out in a few days. Good Luck

There are very few antibiotics I can take because I am on Tikosyn so they put me on amox-cav

I'll keep your nephew in my prayers. Justin's problems showed up when he was a day old. Its a good think he is somewhere where the staff is on top of things. Let us know how the echo goes.

Laura:
My experience is that a PDA is one of most easily corrected cardiac defects and sometimes closes on its own or with medication. This may be the case with your nephew; if not, doctors can easily remedy the situation with surgery, perhaps by catheterization.
I'll be praying for him, your entire family and his doctors. Will be awaiting word that he's doing just fine.

Please take care of yourself. Did you mean that you're on amox-clav (a generic Augmentin)? Three months ago, our 15YO Persian had a "raging" bladder infection, and our vet Rxed Clavamox for her for 14 days, I think. It did the trick. However, it caused some diarrhea, which we resolved by giving her plain yogurt and solid pack pumpkin.
So, if you notice any diarrhea when taking antibiotics, eat some yogurt, uncooked apples, sharp cheddar cheese -- all those contain bacteria and nutrients that help repopulate the "good" bacteria in your GI tract that some antibiotics can kill.

Any update on your nephew? I'm hoping no news is good news. BTW I don't know if his parents are interested, but it might be easier for them to update everyone, with a caringbridge.org or carpage site, I also really loved being able to read all the messages and prayers in the middle of the night.
and it is nice to reread years later, when life is good.
