Very interesting presentation on AVS from the NEJM in 2013:

Some of this will be old hat to the old timers here, but look at the more current stuff regarding the involvement of Lp(a) and my old pal, rs10455872. As the presentation points out, the future of AVS prevention may well be early identification via genetic and Lp(a) testing, and medication. It'll come just a smidgen too late for me (for maximum comedic effect), but not too late for my kids.
