Have a dear dear friend that needs a vascular surgeon. Her internist is recommending a local guy - young guy - "he does all the new stuff"! Sounds promising, doesn't it?

She needs to see the best in the country - how do I find that surgeon? She has what is called "nutcracker syndrome". The left renal vein is compressed between the SMA and another artery and that is cutting off blood flow to her left kidney and left ovary, causing pooling of blood in those 2 organs. Additionally when she bends or twists, the symptom also compresses the SMA [superior mesenteric artery] that that cuts off blood to intestines and other major abdominal organs - lots of pain, really really bad. One solution is to remove the left kidney and ovary and that renal vein - so no more compression there, but who wants to give up a good kidney? The other solution is to tack the SMA somewhere inside say to the diaphram to get it off the renal vein? Sounds scary to me. Then they could put a stent in the renal vein but what good does that do when the SMA compresses. All she has to do it bend down to pick up a book or whatever off the floor and she has intense pain from the loss of blood flow.

Anyone know how I can find the best? I've been searching the web. She shouldn't stay in Alaska and use the guy that "does all the new stuff". Evidently he has not worked on this type of problem but he is a good vacular surgeon. I'd want someone who is experienced with this syndrome.

Any help would be appreciated.
