A day in the life of me 'n Miss SS, who is a real wuss:

I was sitting here quietly about noon and Miss SS screamed. I looked over and she came limping from where she was. I looked at her foot, messed with it - (it was the OTHER foot). I finally located the trouble. She must have been cleaning her nails and broke one sideways - or broke it somewhere and she was inspecting it and made it worse. She was so distressed. She kept trying to jump into my lap, which I can't let her do because she's a huge dog, but she finally made it - I was sitting in my computer chair - not an ideal place to hold a 65 lb dog. She got down, I went to my other chair and up she jumped. Then down after leaving huge long scratches w/blood - my blood- on my upper leg - course I have on white shorts and she has the strongest, biggest nails in the world! She hobbled around running to my bedroom, to the front door and back again, obviously in great pain or like something was after her. I let her out, she ran into the yard, came right back. Finally I went to bedroom, laid down and she got there first so we have been lying down. The only time I allow her in bed is when lightning/thunder is all round us and I hold her to get her unscared. We took naps today with her snug up against me.. Then I let her out again because she wanted out, I picked up the mail, she came right back in w/me and is not in as much pain as originally, and is able to inspect her toe, with great care. I don't see her anywhere so I bet she ran back to MY BED and got in. Now I have to change the bed and take a bath! Long as she is still and quiet she's not in as much pain, seemingly, but the nail is sideways and hurts when she stands up. Woe is us. Poor old Sally. I'll let my daughter decide what to do when she gets home. She deals w/the pets better than I do, but Sally always runs to me and not her! Oh, dear.

I think Evelyn is traveling and can't advise us. Anybody?

I can't take Sally to the vet by myself because she'd try to get up front and in my face, then we'd wreck and her toenail would still not be fixed. It might not be a vet trip required, tho.

Sounds like a vet trip unless your daughter can remove it. Sorry to hear of the mishap. I can just picture her sitting on you.

Can you call the vet and ask their advice, Ann?
I'm glad she's not in as much pain as she was . . .that's a plus!

I just hate it when animals are hurt. They are so afraid of anything you want to do to help them. I would imagine that if you tried to cut it off, it would hurt the nail even more. I would get her in to the vet and let them take care of it. They might be able to numb it before they take care of it. At any rate, they will have help to hold her still. Then when you get her home you can baby her and pamper her.

we didn't take her to the vet. He was closed when daughter got home and they don't open til Monday - emergencies are 50 miles away to another vet. She seemed to be easier, but scared and shaking. THEN a storm showed up, with lightning popping all round and loudest thunder you ever heard and she was a real mess then! Shaking and hanging close to me. We had put 3 cats outside and forgot about them when the storm came in, rushed to the door, two came in, but poor old Sam (the other wuss in the household) was nowhere to be found. After the storm was over and he felt safe to come home, he was soaked and scared. We think he ran under a tree instead of to the porch where we have a pet door! Sally shook all night and would jump in my bed now and then, but get right back out. She has tried to heal her wound herself and seems to be not in pain now, but very careful in how she walks. She should be ok. We don't cut her nails because she is outside during the day and never know when she will need them for protection. Thanks for your thoughts.

Do you have vet wrap or coban in the house? She has torn the nail through the quick and that's why it is bleeding and causing her so much pain. Every time the nail is pulled it rips more. Wrap her foot in a sock or ace bandage loosely( to keep the nail from pulling) and tape in place. She will need to be seen by the vet. Deb

Talking about vets...

Talking about vets...

If it weren't for the service trade we have with our vet we'd be in the poor house.
It all started with a normal check-up for my 3 cats. I had not been in for quite a while and since the cats are getting old (15), I thought I better do that because they are loved very much and I hope to have them for at least a few more years. Anyways, we just ended up spending over $2000.00 on the three cats for a regular check-up and to have two of the cats teeth cleaned. That is done under anesthesia. They also had to extract quite a few since they don't fill animals teeth. The total included everything, pre-surgery tests, anesthesia, and post surgery follow-ups. They now want me to brush their teeth every day.    I have to roll them in a towel Q-tip style) so I won't be ripped to shreds by their hind claws. I hope that after these cats leave this world I can live without cats.

uh, the blood was mine, not hers. It has not bled at all. She seems to be taking very good care of it today on her own. She is confused and wants to run away from it but just can't seem to leave it behind - like it's chasing her! So we put her in a bedroom for her own sake, tho she clings to me. We will see how it is when the vet opens Monday.

At least my fur coveredchicken s are: only about 5 lbs so, I can hold them when one gets hurt

Glad she's doing well. How are YOU? Deb

She scratched my legs jumping off my lap and they bled but are ok now. She refused to come in last night no matter how we called and urged. Nor this morning. She was hunkered down in a hole she dug. After ss/church I went out there, she jumped up, ran in the house greeting us happily and then begged to go back to her hole! Didn't even stop to dine. I inspected the toe and she has managed to get the nail off; there is no bleeding and you can see the tip of the underneath nail and some flesh that is pink, but she is happy now and not in pain. We will watch her carefully but I think her crisis is over. Thank goodness. I have always had chihuahuas but Miss SS is huge and I have trouble handling her. Chihuahuas you can put in your pocket! Cats go in a cage, but SS is a horse, almost.
