My mother is having heart surgery at the moment and I am anxious, she is having an aortic valve replacement and possibly a bypass they are not sure about the latter. She is 84 years old and no other medical issues. Has anybody gone through the same experience?
Thanks a bunch.

Every reason to think she'll do fine. I know of several persons who were mid eights and one was 92 when they had OPS and they did fine. If the surgeon and team did not think her strong enough to withstand the surgery, they would have either done it transcath or not at all.

Good luck and please let us know she is safely out of surgery and into CICU. Presumably her surgery should be finished by now or just about so.

Star68, my 84 year old had OHS on October 4. It was a longer recuperation than we wanted for her, but she now driving and living life at her pace.

My mother, 80 at the time had AVR 4 years ago. She did fine, your mom will too. I imagine she is in ICU now and that tough to see your loved one like that, but luckily, she won't remember it. I stayed in the hospital room with her the 2nd night when she was in a regular room. Glad I did, cuz I could comfort her as she woke up frequently and could alert the nurse when she was uncomfortable. ... It's amazing how soon they get them up and walking! I'll keep you and your mom in my prayers!

Hoping all went well and she is recovering now. Yes, as others have indicated, valve replacements in the senior years are not uncommon. I had one in my 60s, am now in my 70s, and there's certainly a chance I will need a replacement of the replacement at some point.

Again, all best to your mom and to you. Please let us know how she does.
