Hi Chris - Coumadin has a half life of about two days. This means that the dose you took four days ago is just about all used up in your body. Your INR is on its way down, and although it's significantly higher than it should be, it's generally not life threatening. You didn't mention when you were tested the various times, but I'm guessing in a couple or three days, you should be about where you should be. I've had some long nose bleeds even with an INR of 3.0. They eventually stop. Try putting an ice cube wrapped in a paper towel against your nose, sit down with your head leaned back, and relax for awhile - that usually does it for me. The bruises will go away, and so will the headache - I doubt the headache has anything to do with Coumadin. Read all you can here about Coumadin - the more you know, the more comfortable you will be with it. Also spend some time on Al's web site - some good stuff there. Hope this helps. Another Chris

I'm with ccrawford on this. Stay the course the doctor has told you to do, and make sure you do it exactly as directed. It is starting to come down, and it will take a couple of days. It is not a fast process. If adjustments are made too fast and too severely, then the patient can start see-sawing. It's happened to Joe a few times.

Just keep doing what your doctor said. You have a good doctor now and she'll help you get regulated. Plus she's testing you frequently. Don't panic.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Hi Chris, I too have trouble with fluctuating INR's. Last week my INR was 4.5 which is high for me. I was spitting up lots of blood and terrible nosebleeds. My cardiologist had me withold Coumadin for 2 days then return to 5mg a day. I go in tomorrow to have it retested. I think the holidays and the was I ate and drank caused it to go up. Dont worry you will get it under control. Hang in there.
