Hi, All,

My husband is scheduled for AVR and quadruple bypass for this Friday. He is 60 and has Type-2 diabetes. I am suiper scared. Your community is the only place i could find any information. I am here for encouragement and advice.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi . I have not had my AVR yet, am in waiting mode until Aug. 9 I will, however, keep you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers this weekend. This is a great group of very supportive folks. They made me feel much better. They have the answers to many questions. Pat

Welcome to this wonderful site. As Pat said, this is a great place for support and where we "all get it". I will be sending positive thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery for your husband this Friday.
Your husband is at a fantastic facility at the Heart Institute.

We will be praying up a storm for your husband's surgery to be a complete success and for you to be comforted as you wait for his surgery to be over. Welcome to the site....Heartfelt hugs...Michael

Hello and welcome. Yes, I hear that the OHI is a great place to have surgery.
My surgery was in Montreal and I can tell you that all of my "older" male surgery companions did much better post op than I did.
:)

Not that many people have a tough time with the surgery so odds are really in your husbands favor of having a smooth surgery and recovery. Several have a bump or two along the way but usually nothing too serious. Please let us know how it goes. We'll be thinking of him Friday.

What's your husband name?

He and you will be in my thoughts and prayers. He'll be just fine. I just had AVR root replacement and a single bypass 3 weeks and 5 days ago. My surgery was 6 or 7 hours long and I've done great. Gaining more strength and feeling better as each week passes. I pray the same for your dear hubby. Like everyone here told me, the waiting and before surgery is the absolute worst part! Take care. ((((hugs))))

Try not to be afraid. The odds are overwhelming that he will do very well, have a complete recovery and be better off than he was before. I was 62 when I had my AVR along with a good hunk of aorta replaced. It's amazing, but this has become routine surgery and is almost universally safe and successful. What did the surgeon tell you?

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for your heartfelt wishes and all the positive vibes! Eric and I are off to the hospital in 1 hr for the pre-op. I can not stay with him the night of the surgery and feel horrible about it. But we pray and hope and believe in the best outcome possible!

Trying to stay positive!

Natalia

Don't feel bad about not staying the night after the surgery. He'll be largely out of it in the ICU, and generally they don't allow you to visit for more than a few hours anyway. Come in the following morning and you'll likely see him getting out of bed to sit up for the first time post-op.

Hoping things go as well as they should.

Hi and welcome to this wonderful place! I don't know much about bypasses (my surgery was a valve replacement) but many of the folks at cardio rehab were there due to bypasses, and some of them were diabetic too. And, some were in their 60s or 70s. They were all doing great as I'm sure your husband will. Will be thinking about him this weekend! Keep us posted.

Eric and Natalia,
Sorry to get here late, but I wish Eric a successful surgery and smooth recovery. It sounds like you have a great heart center for the surgery, and that is key. I had an AVR (only) at 60, with a fairly uneventful recovery and and am feeling sooo much better now.
Be sure to let us know how you're both doing!

Hi Natalia,
I'll keep you and Eric in my prayers. Wishing him all the best for a good surgery tomorrow and a smooth recovery. If you're able to, please post after he's out of surgery, and certainly feel free to ask any questions.

I know this must be hard on you, so take care!

Your hubby should do fine. I was 63 and had my aortic valve and root replaced. Also was/am a type 2 diabetic and that didn't pose any problems other than a nurse waking me right at 4 a.m. every day to take my blood sugar. (When the nurse was cute and friendly, I didn't mind it.) :D I know it seems scary, but the odds are strongly in favor of this going well and leading to a better quality of life.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to say how immensely overwhelmed i am by your kindness and understanding! Thank you so very much for your positive thoughts and beautiful wishes. I just returned from the hospital-Eric is getting a bovine valve and a triple(not quadruple) bypass. The surgeon is very kind and gentle. Everyone seems very nice and helpfull, though the nurse put his diabetes meds on the chart incorrectly. I must add that Eric's daughter works as a nurse in the same unit, but a different flo0r, so she has all the inside info-great help.

Anyway, going to see him tomorrow at 6.00 am before he goes into surgery, then off to the family lounge to wait.

Natalia
