Received a call from my surgeon earlier this month.Monday January 11 is the date I've been scheduled for my second mitrial valve replacement.Spoke with him regarding the "super glue"that is being used in some enters, unfortunately they have not used it yet at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He stated the results of using this "super glue" are very interesting and would make inquiries.

Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Johnny, glad you have a date. Since youve done this before, you know what your going into. But youll still be in our prayers.

Johnny,

Good Luck to you and forgive me for not knowing your story already....why are you having your valve replaced for the second time? Did you get a tissue the first time around or did something go wrong?

Johnny,

Wishing you the very best of luck on Jan. 11th. I will also put you on the calendar as it is official. I recall from your last post that there was discussion of a possible repair of the On-X rather than a replacement. I presume that the repair is a 'no go'.
Good that you enquired about the 'super glue' to close the sternum. Perhaps, they will consider piloting at the UOHI someday.

I hope that the weeks go by quickly for you. I know that you know the drill and the waiting can be the hardest part.

We are all here for you.

I had my first OHS at Mass General six years ago and they 'super glued' my incision then. My second was going on two years ago and they closed me the same way. I'm shocked to hear a heart center is not yet closing in that way, at least some of the time.

Are they going to use the staples?

Sending you very best wishes for a successful surgery and bump free recovery.

Jkm7,
I think Johnny was referring to closing the sternum via super glue rather than using the sternal wires. The Heart Centre in Calgary is piloting this. There is a thread somewhere on this recent advancemet. I had my heart surgery at the Ottawa Heart Institute and I am pretty sure they either used glue or internal stitches, but no staples for the incision. However, I do have sternal wires.

He is probably talking of the glue/material they are starting to use to close sternums, it's called kryptonite something, there is a post in the new advancements forum about it

Hey, if they don't have the glue, I have some denture adhesive that they can use. Cushion Grip! Thermoplastic Adhesive. I think they made this stuff for the wrong thing. Can't get it to stick to my gums, but just try getting it off the dentures. They should use this crap as glue!

Johnny,

Congrats on getting your date -- the 11th sounds like a winner -- and best wishes for everything. "Superglue" is something that hasn't been on my radar scope, but good luck with that, too.

Bring in a roll of Duct Tape and hand it to the surgeon as you go in. Lighten the mood.
