Lurker No More!! My ?date with destiny? starts 18 January 2005 with a visit to Dr. David McGiffin at University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB).

Sorry this is long but let me introduce my HEART. My road started about 10 years ago with a stress test that indicated some problems. I was referred to Dr. Cherry and Dr. Swindt in Columbus, GA. Dr. Cherry performed a Cath which revealed one artery 100 per cent blocked (which had made its own by-pass) and another about 70 per cent blocked. Both were old blockages that prevented stints or balloon. Because of my age (under 50 at the time), they felt I could manage things by medication instead of immediate Open Heart Surgery. I?ve had countless Thallium Stress Tests, and had Radiofrequency Ablation (done at St Joseph?s in Atlanta) to prevent ?RACING HEART??which was successful by the way.

I?ve been successful with Cholesterol lowering drugs and diet. I?ve endured the 36 one hour treatments on Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) with no marked improvement. In the spring of 2004 I suddenly started experiencing shortness of breath and lack of energy. As I posted elsewhere, I attribute this SUDDEN CHANGE to a change from Oretic (which I had been on for over 8 years) to ALTACE. My symptoms kept getting worse. I went to my GP and an ultrasound of my gallbladder revealed fluid buildup on my right lung (gallbladder was OK!!!!). I had a MUGA Scan which did not reveal any heart related problems for the fluid. I had fluid withdrawn from my right lung and all tests came back negative. The Lung Doc finally said that ?sometimes we don?t know what caused the fluid retention?. I was still feeling bad and my blood pressure had shot up. I could not get the lower number below 100. My GP increased my ALTACE and told me to come back in 6 weeks. About a week later, I was so swollen I could hardly put my shoes on. My wife said my stomach looked like I was pregnant. I also had a dry cough. My wife insisted I STOP the ALTACE and go back to Oretic, which I did. Within 48 hours I felt 200 per cent better. I even realized that my tongue had been swollen too. I contacted my Heart Docs and the Echo revealed my valve regurgitation. Another Cath by Dr Cherry measured my severe Valve Regurgitation and blood flow problems. While in there the second time, he discovered another of my arteries has signs of blockage.

Along with the Valve Replacement I am to have at least 3 arteries by-passed. Dr Cherry and Dr Swindt, both whom I trust with my life, feel that because of my weakened heart condition (less than 30 per cent) I am prone to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Therefore, Dr Cherry implanted an ICD on 22 December 2004. Because of the upcoming holidays (and so many key people on vacation) they felt I could wait until January for Valve and By-Pass Surgery. Dr Cherry feels that the ICD will be needed even after my surgery to help maintain my weakened heart.

GADGETMAN comes from my truck driving days (no, not a big rig?just a small delivery truck). That was my CB Handle. I seemed to want every gadget that came out (much to my wife?s dismay). I was loaded with a CB (of course), scanners (usually 2), GPS, and finally got XM Radio to supplement my AM/FM. Although I?m no longer driving the truck I?ve now added the ICD (which I keep with me 24/7) and am soon to have my valve replaced. WOW!!!!!

I have learned a lot reading the posts here and will continue to list my PROGRESS here. Everyone say a prayer for me and my loved ones during this trip.

Well congratulations on the date! Hopefully someone can post updates on you while your out. Prayers go with everyone entering this domain. That's standard issue and will be done.

I think all of us guys are gadget guys. :D

GADGETMAN,

Good luck on the 18th Our prayers are with you.

January 18th will be 3 months to the day that I had my new "Gadget" put in, and I havent felt better. I am sure you will be fine and will be feeling better than you can remeber once you recover.

Good Luck!

Jeff

EXCELLENT CHOICE of Surgeons Gadgetman!

I was most impressed with Dr. McGiffin when I first heard him making rounds while I was in ICU at UAB a few years ago. One of my Cardiologists said he would allow Dr. McGiffin to operate on any of his family members if they were in need. Dr. McGiffin epitomizes the old 'country doctor' bedside manner yet is a highly respected heart and lung transplant surgeon. A few of our members have been fortunate to have had their surgeries performed by Dr. McGiffin and they are doing fine. You are in 'good hands'.

I'm still here. Had my first Interrogation of my ICD today. Everything checks out find. It verified that I have not experienced any "Episodes". The Tech indicated that my Pacing Lead Impedance had increased but she said the Doc would contact me if there was any concern.

I am looking at triple bypass and mitral valve repair/replacement. I'll find out more when I visit Dr. McGiffin on the 18th.

Al, it made me feel good to read your comments about Dr. McGiffin. Both Drs. Cherry and Schwindt in Columbus talk very highly of him. Both said they wouldn't want to send me to anyone else. I am glad I found these forum sites (both ICDs and Valve Replacement). After reading all the posts it gets you out of that "WHY ME" attitude right quick.

Ross, I'll try to get the wife to post on here if I am unable. Maybe I'll have a room with an internet hook-up and can "talk" post surgery. Us CBers never shut up...............

And Jeff, thanks for the thoughs and prayers. I have experenced my shortness of breath, lack of energy, and just plain BLAAAA feeling for over a week now. I'll endure almost anything to get "back to my old self".

We'll be thinking of you on the 18th and look forward to hearing about an uneventful recovery. Keep us posted.

Gadgetman's progress

Hello All, I?m Gadgetman?s wife, Peggy. We have had an interesting day. Our meeting with Dr. McGiffin ended up with Dan being admitted. Dr. McGiffin said it was very serious. He needs 3 or 4 bypasses, reposition the AICD lead, his Tricuspid valve and mitro are both leaking. If they can?t repair the mitro we are going with the mechanical valve. He said the pressure in his lungs was way up on the last test could delay the surgery. He said they would need to check the pressure and if it was still up they would give him meds to bring it down. It could take one or two days or longer to get it to where he thought surgery was safe. I asked him if he wanted to put him in earlier and try and control it. After I told him we were here until something was done he said let?s do it. They put in the Swan Ganz thingee and they said it looked good. Still don?t know if the surgery is on for Friday. I guess we will find out tomorrow or Thursday.

Talked to Sue (SJJ) the other night and it really helped Dan. He is still a bit emotional which is understandable. She was a big help in settling his nerves.

I?ll keep you updated when I can.

Peg

It's a tough way to start, that's for sure. But he's in the right place, with the right surgeon. I'd be more than a bit emotional myself, so I'm certainly not going to throw stones at his concerns.

I guess you realize that there are a lot of people here who are thinking of or praying for him, and willing the best results for him (and you).

Please let him know that he only thinks he's alone in there...

Very best wishes,

Dear Peg and Dan,
All our best wishes are with you and we will be thinking of you and praying for you over the next few days. Please tell him how much we are all pulling for him and take care of yourself. I know how stressful this must be for you as well. Please keep us all posted if you can.

Wow, it sounds like you've both got a lot to deal with in the coming days and weeks. I hope all goes well and I'll be sending out positive thoughts to you both....

Anna : )

Peg, Thanks for the update. Will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayers. Keep strong, I know it is very difficult for both of you. Sounds like your Drs are on top of things, and you are in a great place. Others here have had surgery there and were more than satisfied with the results. Sending hugs and best wishes your way, tell your husband we are all thinking of him.

just wanted to send out another thought for the two of you. their is another prayer looking down over your husband over these next few days. best of wishes to you both and keep us updated.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband through this difficult time. He is in good hands both with the surgeon and with the guy upstairs. It is very scary, I can vouch for that, but now over a year post-op, I am just so thankful for the medical team that saved my life and for the people at VR.com that got me through emotionaly.

We're all pulling for him!!! And you too, take care of yourself through all of this too. ;)
