Hi!

Just wondering if there is anyone on this site who has had a valve replacement operation in the Washington, DC area and if so, perhaps he/she could recommend an appropriate heart surgeon. I had a mitral valve repair last summer which lasted a month. I must now have a reoperation to replace the valve and to repair my tricuspid valve. I went to the Cleveland Clinic for the MV repair and would go back again to a different doctor there. However, I would also like to explore the possibility of having a local surgeon specializing in this surgery in my area perform my reop to avoid the expense and stress of travel and lodging etc. to Cleveland.

If anyone has any specific recommendations or has had successful MV replacement experiences with a surgeon in the metro DC area, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you!

Thanks so much!

Hi Christie, The two best centers for heart surgery in our area are the Washington Hospital Center in NW DC and Inova Fairfax in Falls Church where I had my surgery. Dr. Lefrak and Dr. Spiers are most experienced at Fairfax and Dr. Corso and Garcia at WHC.Both hospitals have crackerjack youg surgeons with great anesthesia, pump techs, and all round support. E-mail me if you want more details. Marty

Inova

I just wanted to second what Marty said about DC area heart facilities, particularly Inova. Dr. Speir and his surgery associates are first-rate, and so is the whole level of care at Inova Fairfax's Heart Institute. I am speaking from my own experience but I think various ratings bear this out, too. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks so much Bob & Marty for your recommendations on Fairfax Inova and Drs. Speirs/Lefrak:) I am hoping to have a consult appointment with one of them in early March--understandably there's a relatively long waiting list to get in to see either of them:)

Thanks again!

Christie,

Here's a link to an article in Virginia Business magazine around the time the Inova Fairfax Heart Center opened. It hadn't been open long when I had my OHS surgery there.

Note that most of the rooms are private. That was very comforting and helpful also for my family members who visited. The nurses were very attentive and compassionate. And Dr. Speir and his associates were right on top of recovery progress during the five days I was there.

Also here's a link to results of a survey in Washingtonian Magazine that ranked Dr. Speir and Dr. Lefrak among the top surgeons in the area.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you on your journey. I am confident you will do well. Keep us posted!

Cheers,

Bob

I think the Washington Hospital Center's Heart Institutue is first rate. Did not know that Dr. Garcia was still operating there. He is amazing.
I had my surgery at the Univ of Maryland in Baltimore-Dr. James Gammie who does valve surgery all of the time. He also is doing amazing research on ways to improve the procedures for repair and replacing valves.

Hopkins

Hopkins

All right, not excactly Metro DC area (where I live too). But Johns Hopkins is a couple minutes from the Inner Harbor area in Baltimore. Dr. Cameron will be my surgeon.
