Tonight I felt like staying up late. We have a metal roof on the house (fireproof & maintenance free)-but the best part is the sound. Tonight the rain is crashing down again. If you have never heard the sound, I don’t know how to describe it. When a really heavy mountain rain crashes down on the metal roof you can’t have a conversation in the house. And with the chance to hear the sound of all that water crashing down, you don’t feel like casual conversation. Things are really rocking tonight. Lightening is flashing all around the house, and there is tremendous thunder blasting around the mountain and echoing off the canyon. I can’t see them, but I know the arroyos are filling up, and a rain like this is moving tons of boulders down the mountain, towards the river. Anybody trying to drive down our mountain road will probably have to wait till morning. This part of the country still has the opportunity, every so often, to show us little humans who is really in ultimate control. And all this sound and power has jump-started my audio motor. Now I have the stereo cranked to my favorite loud music. The only limit tonight is to avoid permanent hearing loss.

That made me wonder-for those of us who occasionally like the music REALLY loud-what do you listen to when you want to hear it loud? My current favorites are Erasure (practically everything they do, especially the live recordings), and Faithless (I particularly like Salva Mea, Insomnia, One Step Too Far, and Tarantula). While I am typing away on my laptop (and not plugged into anything where the lightening could get it) I thought I would ask-How many of us (every so often) like to hear the music REALLY loud-and for those who do-what do you listen to?

Older stuff - Moody Blues, The Who, Buffalo Springfield, and some of the Rolling Stones. Love the sound of rain on the roof.

Rain

Dennis I know what you mean by rain on a metal roof. It is so cathartic. Many older Australian homes have a metal roof and it is great to hear heavy rainfall on one. Unfortunatly in south east Australia summer thunder storms are not as common as I rember as a child, I suppose this is one of the concequences of climate change. :)

How strange - I just did a post on my blog about music as I LOVE it - many different artists too, depending on the mood I'm in. I like Orson and the Kooks at the moment but have a pretty diverse taste and listen to anything from disney songs to Curtis Stigers ands the odd classical piece. I love upbeat music up loud though - something I can sing along to.

The sound of rain

on a roof is one of the most wonderful sounds...Dennis I can tell you are in love with where you live - it sounds very beautiful.

As for me and loud music - give me a good tenor (Pavarotti of course) or some Alison Krauss and her fiddle - I know - I have very eclectic taste in music. ;)

Keep them coming:

Keep them coming:

I have enough music on my laptop to play 24/7 for a week. And I love it all. But I haven't heard of "Orson" or Alison Kraus. I may drive down to the Library for a high speed connection and some virtual shopping at the i-tunes store. Please keep the suggestions coming in.

My husband loves Alison Kraus. You won't be disappointed. Clear, clear voice. She's amazing.

Music is my first choice of tonic for anything. We have an old McIntosh stereo (not as in computer Mac), we traded up from tubes when we got married, but the system is from the 80's. We can really rock the house....lots of amperage.

I guess my all time favorite would have to be Bono and U2. Such a raw all encompassing presence. Love the guy. Amazing live, as well. On melancholy days I'll pop in Neil Young (his latest movie, about his Prairie Wind concert.....it was fabulous.....any fan would appreciate that....hope it makes it to DVD soon). Rolling Stones get me cranked up too! Beatles on silly days. I think my list is way too long for this website!

I think it all boils down to suiting the mood. On pissy days, I like angry music so I can sing at the top of my lungs and just kind of exorcise the bad mood. On slow days I need "pump you up" music. It all comes from rock and roll and has to have good lyrics to sing to.

I have always wondered what it would be like to live with a metal roof. I'm inordinately sound sensitive and figured it would be too much for me. I sometimes almost hear voices in exhaust fan noise, or heavy rain. It's the rhythm (or lack of it) in the sound....those empty spaces....the white noise.

Okay.....maybe it's time to go crank up the stereo! (my husband is asleep!!) It's saturday morning...... When I was growing up every saturday morning my father would put on marching band music really loud to get the weekend going! You know. Da-da-da-DUM kind of stuff. After surviving the 60's, too, it's amazing I can still hear anything!! :D

Memories

Maurgerite: You reminded me of something I hadn't thought of in a long time. I used to love to get up early & crank up Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band. The kids loved it, and Barb tolerated it for our sake. When the kids became teenagers-loud music early on a Saturday morning-someone (as in me) might have gotten killed.

I like your comment about the occaisional need for "pissy music". I think I have shared that experience of needing some angry music on "hopefully" rare occaision. the song "I love to hate you" by Erasure-now that is angry music. You wouldn't want to find yourself listening to that on a regular basis. But it can be a good way to vent if you need a little while for your emotions to come back under the type of control required for being fit to be around other people.

Denis,

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is my favourite artist, I have listened to his music since the River Album and yes I like to play it loud, I prefer live shows ( no shortage of live shows with Bruce ) accoustic Bruce is not really my thing but I must say I love thenew album Segar Sessions
I have been lucky enough to see Bruce in Concert 5 times.

I also listen to Ryan Adams ( another New Jersey guy )

I also like the Rolling Stones, Oasis,( a Manchester band ) The Who ( we got to hear The Who at there last concert in Liverpool about a month ago It was in the open so we just stood outside as we were unable to get tickets)
Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Creedence Clearwater Revival,Buffalo Springfield ( For What its Worth ) U2 and I love all the Motown Music which take me back to my school days,

and If I could have attended one concert it would have to have been Woodstock

Keep smiling

I too love it all.. very eclectic - only place I sing, though, is in the car and only if i'm driving.. but I listen at work and home to a variety.. at work on my cd player i'm currently listening to the Gorillaz or Joss Stone - they are two CDs that I can listen to the entire disk and enjoy.. at home, i'll crank up on my computer or cd player some hard/heavy music such as Queensryche, Judas Priest and/or Nitewish. i'm also a 80's chic, so anything from that era along with the 70's and some 60's or 50's... on the lighter side, I enjoy Sarah Brightman, Gaither Gospel, Alan Jackson, Alabama, Sugarland and even some classical.. next on my list of things to own is a actual stereo... mine didin't survive the move back to PA several years ago.. so cranking my headphones is where I mostly listen to it all with..

oh, and I too love the sound of rain.. then going out and smelling it in the air? nothing like it..

It's taken me a while to respond to this post because I have such varied taste in music that I keep changing my mind. As some of you know I'm a music director at a church (I'm responsible for directing and leading the contemporary worship). My main instrument is my voice, but I play piano and taught myself guitar about a year and a half ago so I could write music without sitting at the piano. (It's hard to play the piano semi-reclined. :D) I pull music from just about every genre out there. Just because the artist may not be Christian doesn't mean there's not something meaningful in the music and lyrics.

I'm with Rain, I LOVE a good thunderstorm. If I know those I love are safe inside somewhere, you can't beat that sound. It has such power and makes me feel cozy.

Right now, I love blasting my Delirious? CD "Mission Bell", particularly the songs "Paint the Town Red", "Solid Rock" and "Our God Reigns". (And there is really a ? in the band's name.) They are a very well known Christian group and I was priviledged to rock out and worship with them in concern recently. I also like blasting Bodyrocker's "I Like the Way". (It's a very sexy song. ;) Dr. Pepper used it in one of their commercials.) Their song "I Wanna Live" is a great rock song. Good anthem for here!

But then there's classical. Sometimes the best thing to play loud is a great symphony.

Then there's The Boss. If you haven't seen him in concert. Get a concert DVD of his and watch it. Bruce is a classic. His CD The Rising is one I can't listen to without tears in my eyes. He wrote it post 9/11 and it is extremely touching. But I just crank up the volume for Waiting on a Sunny Day from that CD. (and yes, dance around a bit).

I could go on. Music is the third most important thing in my life, but I'll stop here.
