...that might surprise others.

As a kid, I remember feeling that interest in music was a "one genre only" type of thing because so many people I knew were either anti-rock or anti-country ... and didn't really have much of a "crossover" experience. But, in the last few years or so, more and more people tend to have an eclectic taste in music, myself included.

I can't stand to leave the radio station on one station all the time; too much music is out there (old and new) that I like and want to be hearing.... This is because my musical interests have grown ten fold (or so it seems) over the last few years, with "exposure" to all types of music, more than just country (which I grew up on) or rock or alternative. This is somewhat evident in the playlists for my radio shows the past 3 years, especially the radio shows I hosted this January 2008:

So, how about you? How eclectic is your music background and interest? Any music that you enjoy that would surprise others and/or that isn't exactly "popular"?

For me, it is hard to choose. Music is something that elevates your spirit and it may mean something different every time or bring you back a memory that really transport you to another dimension. For example, the song ?As Time goes By? will always remind me of a very special person. Then, just the other night I went to the ballet and they danced several Sinatra?s songs. Once he did no say anything to me, but now I realized why he was so great....his enunciation was magnificent. Go to the classics and Tristan & Isolde is and ode to Love and the 6h Symphony of Beethoven is an amazing kaleidoscopic picture of 3 basic notes and I dance by myself when I hear some Latin songs. Sometimes is not the music but the conductor....love Zubin Metha as I say he does not conducts the orchestra but makes love to the music. The same symphony conducted by some else does not sound the same. And have you pay attention to a French Horn? How sweet it can sound? So how do you choose? You tell me

mmm 38, 6ft4, 270pounds, married, two kids, grey hair, heart surgery.......favourite music.....Dance.

Basically i like "The ministry of sound" who remix loads of popular songs with a twist...

My wife refers to it as "doof doof" music as thats all you can hear as my car drives by.

Far too 'young' a music type for an old fart like me to listen too but loved the beat since the original beasty boys and "break dance" sounds of the 80's/90's

I love loads of different types of music, from mika to David Bowie. 1 of my favourite groups is the Bee Gees, all my friends laugh at me but i think they have brilliant voices and great songs.

Music - I prefer a pretty or beautiful melody with nice harmonies and a strong rhythm. Beautiful music can make me cry.

My mother performed at a concert pianist level when she married my sweet dad who loved music, mainly twangy country, while he could barely carry a tune in a basket--but he cheerfully kept trying...

So, I love beautiful music, in no particular order but including: orchestral Vivaldi; and piano Chopin; and piano ragtime; and much of Boston and similarly-produced bands; and most of Toby Keith's (self-written) pieces; and lots of blue grass (if it's in-tune); and Marty Robbins; and nearly all flamenco (and accoustical) guitar (including George Svoboda and Fred Benedetti and Peter Pupping and the more famous Ottmar Liebert); and most Michael Buble (if you like Frank Sinatra you'll love this young guy's voice); and most orchestral and piano Mozart and Beethoven; and Enya; and some piano Debussy; and Ronnie Milsap's beautiful pitch and smooth voice; and Hal Ketchum's ballads; and the Judds; and some of the Dixie Chicks; and so much more beautiful music.

-----------------------------------

Interesting quote from Heinrich Heine (1797-1856): "What is music? This question occupied my mind for hours last night before I fell asleep. The very existence of music is wonderful, I might even say miraculous. Its domain is between thought and phenomena. Like a twilight mediator, it hovers between spirit and matter, related to both, yet differing from each. It is spirit, but it is spirit subject to the measurement of time. It is matter but, it is matter that can dispense with space."

I really like all type of music but you asked for one that might surprise you??.

I grew up in a very musical family. We were exposed to all types of music. I had a great uncle who was the leader of the Carolina Big Band and Jazz Society for a number of years. I would go one Sunday a month to the VFW for their concerts and fell in love with the old Big Band sound. He was a hell of a horn player and played with some of the biggies like Benny Goodman and Les Brown. Sadly most of those guys are gone or too old to play.

Music!!!!

Music!!!!

I don't fit the classic redneck: Classic country, LOTZ of BLUEGRASS, oldies rock, and classics! I even like what we used to refer to as "elevator music." Most all my family is musically inclined, either playing instruments or singing. I can't carry a tune in a 10 gallon bucket! Only thing I can play is the radio;) My church choir always liked my to sing tenor, like ten-or eleven miles away!

I keep several oldies and bluegrass CDs in my car, but my wife can't stand the grass, gotta keep Josh Turner CD for her.

I'd hope so, your my neighbor. :)

I still love Motown, and Marvin Gaye is one of my favorites.

I also love Cuban music. . . must be the beat that gets me moving. ;)

I pretty much like

I pretty much like

any music except for heavy jazz and the blues or rap or New Age. That excludes a lot, I know. ;) I have very, very eclectic musical taste ranging from opera to bluegrass.

I like any styles except bluegrass or rap. Just can't take those two.

A big fan of 70's music, pop and country; maybe that has something to do being a teen then ;) . Gosh, this is my 30 year high school graduation anniversary. That feels old.

Of course, Superbob, Cindy and I love Carrie.

I was Country when Country wasn't cool!!!!

Country is my favorite by a long shot, but I also like most other kinds of music. After Country, I would say that I like Classical and some Easy Rock. Jazz is Albert's favorite, so I have come to enjoy it over the years. Chet Baker and Dave Brubeck are favorites.

*grins*

SAME HERE!!! he he he! Love that song by Barbara Mandrell, with a guest from George Jones ;).

*pauses*

Hmm....looks like some of you might've enjoyed my radio shows....

Not sure if anyone notices the song quote in my signature each time I post, but if you do, you've noticed my eclectic tastes that way, too. I try to use a different quote each time.... And, no, I don't remember when or why I started quoting songs in my signature...guess it just developed as a way to be different and illustrate how diverse I am ... that I'm not just about heart issues or the Monte Carlo....

When my daughter and grandkids were here, I turned on rap for the grandkids, 2 preteen boys. They were so happy when I did that. Later on, my daughter asked me if I had been listening to the lyrics. I admit I hadn't. She said they were quite nasty sometimes. Who could hear the lyrics anyway with all that racket?

And no, I don't listen to it when they are not here!

But I do remember my teenage years when my dad thought Elvis "the pelvis" was just scandalous.

And I suppose some of the classical composers were thought of as outcasts when they were starting out.:p

I used to be country through and through. But,with 5 teenage grandkids I had to change my taste some. I listen to mostly soft rock. My 13 year old granddaughter loaded Pinks ringtone on my new phone this past weekend and Saturday night her and three of her friends were trying to teach me the Soulja Boy dance routine. My husband got a good laugh anyway.

Oh my ... this brings back memories of a Christmas Day discussion a long time ago. I can't remember how we got on the topic, but we were talking about music of the day (late 80s, early 90s) and I remember my Aunt Chris saying something about how she didn't understand some of the kids "today" listening to some of the "crap" they call music. Without missing a beat, Gram jumped in and said, "Well, now you know how we felt about Elvis."

LOL!!!!!

Ohhh...Nancy, I needed that laugh today, thank you, darlin' ;).

And, Terry, I used to be only country, too ... until the mid-1990s when Country radio FORGOT about country music prior to 1990. By then, rock songs sounded country and vice versa anyway....

*shrugs*
