Hi
You all seem to be so knowledgeable and I'm glad I found this forum. I had mitral valve repaired in August and have a question that maybe you know about
As the sternum is put together with wire, is it safe to have an MRI?

It is safe, wires not a problem.

I beleive though it can be an issue with some older mechanical valves.

I had an mri several weeks ago with st jude valve.

Thank you so much Mike for your answer. I really appreciate your time
I was worry about the wiring they use to put back together the sternum.
Am I the only one who had that concern?

Marta --

no need to worry. I have three or four sternal wires and have had about a half dozen MRIs. The wires were never a problem.

Just to appease your curiosity, ask your surgeon what type of wire he uses to bind the sternum back together.

GOOD stainless steel is NON-magnetic.

Thanks to all. It makes me feel better.
Al, I did ask my surgeon and he said "good question". It almost makes me believe that no one in all these years had asked him that. But he mentioned they use "steel wires" and to let them know before having an MRI( just I you mentioned...thanks...)
