Seems I?ll be moving into a new Waiting Room!!

Just saw my cardio and she says we?re in no hurry, but my echo of last week shows a further narrowing of the aortic valve (from .9 to .7cm sq.). She says, we can wait for further symptoms, or go right to the surgeon. (ya gotta love these cardios! I thought all the things I?d been reporting were symptoms!) Seeing as how this is the holidays, and my long delayed colonoscopy is next week, and my October mammogram revealed the need for a breast biopsy (that?s probably going to get moved up from the February date I have now) and it?s my 25th wedding anniversary soon, and my birthday and my husband?s birthday??..I?m hoping/thinking late February or mid March for the heart surgery. (kids will be coming home for spring break if they really want to be there). My husband suggested that I have a consultation with my regular physician to sort out what is most important and how to schedule things. When the cardio said, ?be sure to tell the colonoscopy and biopsy anestesiologist to have a careful watch on your blood pressure, and tell them that your valve is significantly narrowed? it freaked me out more than the news of the impending heart surgery! (who wants to croak with a tube up their a**??? ) My GP (whom you?ll recall I really love) was again wonderful. We?re going to cut my BP dose in half ahead of time and hold off on the morning dose until after the procedure (the cardio concurred). GP said ?we want your BP up to a nice normal high that day?. For the breast biopsy I?m waiting to hear if that surgeon will let me do just a local anesthetic. My GP had a node removed under her arm with just local and enjoyed the whole watching and listening thing. She thinks I?m tough enough to manage it. That was all a relief to me as I don?t want to be juggling anesthetics so close to a possible heart surgery. The GP told me not to wait on the surgeon ? to call him NOW and make a first appointment. So, I?ve gotten 2 names from my cardiologist (who calls back personally, albeit, very business like) and now it?s time to flip a coin and choose one of them!!

It?s very weird how you wait and wait and then POW the news actually hits you like a ton of bricks. The first thing you think is, holy sh** I don?t have time to do this and such!! Where did the time go?? How can I get this done by ???? You really don?t know how it?s going to affect you. I thought I was so ready, but instead I?ve been fighting tears at the whimpiest things??.I think it?s the holidays mixed in??.so much emotion already! And small stresses. Frankly, I?m so happy to be getting this POS heart that I?ve been walking around with for 51 years fixed that I think celebrating is what I should be doing!! It?s like I?ve been in a room with not quite enough light and now I get to schedule to have a window put it. Sounds good to me!!

Thanks for listening to my diatribe. Feel free to respond in any way, I welcome all reactions and opinions.

Yep. This is good. Finally!!

:D Marguerite

Marguerite,

If it were me, I would try to schedule surgery within a month of having your colonoscopy and biopsy. The only reason I am suggesting this time frame is so you don't drive your self crazy waiting. Once you know it's going to happen, it's hard to really concentrate on anything else.

We're here for you.:) :) :) :)
Hugs,
Mary

Wow! You need a sign to put up that says road under repair. Sorry but you have a lot of medical things going on at the same time. I must commend you for your great attitude and outlook on life in general. Most people would prolly handle all the things your going thru at once not so well. Good Luck to you and I will let you know how it feels to wake up aftewr surgery since I am scheduled Jan 5 myself for AVR.

Sorry for all that you have going on. I am sure it cuts into the holiday excitement.

I would meet with the surgeon ASAP and let him suggest how long to wait. You may get totally different responses from the surgeon than from your GP or cardio.

If surgery is to be soon, I would agree that you should schedule it ASAP just to get past all this and on with your life.

Marguerite-

You have too many things going on! That's for sure!

I agree that you should schedule with the surgeon and ask him about the timetable that is right for you. He could be booked, or on vacation during the holidays, and it might be hard to get in really fast, so the sooner you speak with him, the better. Then you will know about that big elephant on the living room.

I also agree with you that you should celebrate getting your ticker fixed up. After the initial stuff, it will make a huge difference in your quality of life.

I want to wish you all the best for your colonoscopy and biopsy. Those are definitely not fun things and waiting for results is pretty terrible. So I'll be thinking of you.

Well - you set a high bar for excitement!

I had a lumpectomy with a local - I'd do it that way again if necessity arose (please God, no thank You). I would suggest you use a headset if possible - I got a little queasy with the "squish squish" sounds; and my anxiety rose when it was obvious that the surgeon was quite certain the lump was malignant. But as far as the procedure and recovery went, it was the best; no pain, went home and took a pain pill so I never had any discomfort.

Hi Marguerite

I really liked Randy's comment...."Road under repair!!!" WOW, do you have a full plate.....

IMHO, I would get the surgeon's appointment now. Between the time surgery is scheduled, you'll probably have time for everything else. Maybe you could move up the biopsy and the colo....after that, get it done....I sure wouldn't wait too long, you'll have alot more birthdays, etc., that you can celebrate once it's done.

Good luck with your appointments.

Evelyn

You have a full plate Marguerite and I admire your attitude!:) I concur that you should choose the surgeon and get the appt. right away- there's nothing wrong with interviewing more than one surgeon also. (We did and chose the second one) So sorry that all this has happened at once and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers for all good results.
Best Wishes,
Phyllis

Marguerite,
Phyllis makes a good point; there's no reason to let chance determine which surgeon you choose. Set up an appointment with both. Once you visit with them, you'll have a better idea of when to schedule the surgery.

Hi, Marguerite--Wow, this is a big development. It will take a little time to process, but it sounds like you're halfway there already! I am rooting for you to find the absolute best surgeon (I've been finding the process of surgeon hunting for Matt to be sort of theraputic--though we are in leisurely mode compared to your situation). You're an expert already, judging by your intelligent posts here, about how to go about everything--just find the very best one for you!

As a breast biopsy veteran (two surgical biopsies), I would like to urge you to go with the local anesthetic. I found the experience to be relatively painless (not nearly as bad as a fine-needle aspiration) and actually sort of interesting, as your GP did. If it hadn't been for the anxiety about the results, I really wouldn't have minded it much at all. Results were negative both times, as they almost always are. I'll bet you'll be walking out of there relieved. I guess this is another thing we have in common! One additional thing--we both have a terrier in the family, ours is an airedale.

Good luck with everything, Marguerite. I'll be sending good vibes your way.

Jane (aka francie12)

Marguerite,

Sounds like your plate is very full for the holidays and beyond. Keep that chin up and face things head on. Sounds like things are beginning to move very fast. Just think, soon things will be behind (OOOPS--colonoscopy:eek:  :D ) you and you will be bragging about how the healing process is going. Prayers and good thoughts are coming your way for you and your family.

May God Bless,

Danny

Wow!...

you do have a full schedule ahead dont you...

Celebrate that new window being put in...sounds like you have a great attitude and I'm sure you'll sail thru all these events like a champion...

Positive thoughts go along way to aid recovery...

Hi Marguerite,

Sorry to hear about the regression in the valve diameter, but its good you are as prepared as one can possibly be for this surgery. I only completely understood how lucky I was, to have a chance at having a better life, after the surgery.

All the best -- you know that you have all of us firmly in your corner, you will be cheered wildly all the way.

Regards,
Burair

Marguerite,
Take it one day at a time. You have quite a journey ahead of you, that has a few curves in the road. As each day passes, you'll see the path to follow. I know you'll do just fine. I got through it, and you will too! :) I would tend to say get it over with ASAP. That new waiting room you are about to enter is the worst part of the ordeal. Have you considered consulting the "imfamous", as you put it, Dr. Starr?

Good morning! (pacific coast!) Thanks everyone!!:D :D . Spent yesterday shopping til we dropped with my hubbie, then out to dinner for the best chicken pot pie ever!! on a cold windy dry :)eek: even in Oregon!!) day. Fun day.

Wow. You guys are so sweet. Thanks for all the support! Danny, you rascal! Randy, I need to get caught up on your situation. I suspect you'll beat me to the table so I'll be listening closely to hear of your experience. And, yes, Road under repair :D . Actually it's the old age comments (no offense to any of you septogenarians out there), "your heart looks great for a 75 year old", "well, you'll be doing all those will writing, getting your affairs in order things", "oh, it's okay, we deal with all kinds of 75 year olds with similar conditions so we'll know to watch your BP". It's like, okay already!! My heart is a mess! We know this! :)

Jane and Georgia. I can't thank you enough for your remarks! I'll definitely do the local if it's okay with the surgeon. These abnormalities are in a milk duct. Very very pre-pre-pre cancer if they turn out to be cancer at all. Too close to the surface to do a needle biopsy, thus the regular surgery. THey'll wire locate it first, then ream it out somehow. I was told that if (big if) it's cancerous (again, pre, pre, pre) it's the kind that is very vicious, but when gotten out at this stage, rarely comes back. Whatever. I mean do they ever really know. For some reason I'm not too worried. I like the headphone idea. I'll ask Santa for a Nano!

Nancy, Gina, Evelyn, Phyllis, Mary, George.... I'm calling on Monday for an appointment. I was going to have my husband read the 2 bios online and choose his "favorite" but reading your remarks, I may very well go see both of them. They are in the same group as the "best" cardiothoracic surgeon (as purportedly voted by all physicians in town in Portland Magazine), and seem incredibly well papered. My father's triple by-pass surgeon is in this group, and his heart is working great after 8 years!! And my cousin who does angiograms mentioned several of these guys to me 2 years ago. So, it seems to be a great place to start.

Mary and Harry, thanks for the hugs. I'll be collecting them graciously for as long as I can!! Burair, George and Aussie (brain freeze, your name is escaping me, sorry) thanks for the support and kind words.

I suspect I'll feel more panicky after the surgeon appointment. Right now, I must say, it's weird, but there's a stoicism about it. Like, oh, good. I can carry on now. There's a plan forming.

Okay! Time to get the day going......there's shopping to be done!!

:D Marguerite

Marguerite, You sure are looking at a lot of medical issues at one time! Why haven't they already biopsied the area noted on your Oct. mammo? I'm on short term follow-ups and just last week was told if there was any change on the mammogram or ultrasound then I would be scheduled for a biopsy for the next day. Everything remained the same and I am very thankful. I just hope your doctors are being careful with you.

As for getting your valve replaced, I think the sooner you get it behind you the better. I think you are correct and that you ARE having symptoms. I well remember those feelings when the date is set and the tears gather unbidden at times. I think it is perfectly normal. Your husband's suggestion of seeing your PCP to help you prioritize and set a time table seems like a wise idea. Cyber hugs being sent your way!

Marguerite: I want to add my well wishes to those of everyone else. I hope all of your medical issues are resolved in the right timing and with much success. All the best.

Wise

Thanks, Wise. And by the way, Perry is beautiful!! You will have such a fun Christmas with your new family member!

Betty. Thank you for your helpful words. It was I who postponed the biopsy. She (surgeon) said that after the holidays was fine. Now that I'm rather suddenly headed to a heart surgeon, I'm going to move the biopsy up to whenever she is free to do it. My kids are home until Jan 21st and I was hoping to take care of it after they had returned to school. Now, I'm going to just do it. If I didn't finally get to my colonoscopy (all right! tomorrow!) my husband was gonna have a real hissy fit! I'm the queen procrastinator.

I've made the appointment with the heart surgeon, my cardio's first mention, Dr. Mark T. Metzdorff of The Oregon Clinic. It's for January 9th. Whew! Amazing. That's done. I'll spend some time filtering through this site for what to look for in a surgeon, so I can be relaxed and ready, after the holidays.

Thanks again, everyone!

Marguerite

Glad to hear that you have everything under control, Marguerite. I know what it is to be the "queen of procrastination" when it comes to medical issues. They always appear at the wrong time- kids are coming home, holidays, etc., but as you and I know, if you live a full and active life, there is never a right time. Just do it and get all good results!:)
